Registration Now Open for ErgoX 2021
Join us November 8 – 10, 2021 for ErgoX, a virtual event that will take a deep dive in delivering practical, usable, and evidence-based solutions to the challenges faced by ergonomists, risk managers, and health and safety specialists. ErgoX is designed to showcase and apply the latest ergonomics science to workplace health, safety, wellness, and injury-prevention issues across a variety of domains and settings. Our three educational tracks this year focus on exoskeletons, robotics, and cybersecurity.
The theme of this year’s virtual symposium will examine the intersection of AI and HF/E in the design of safe, user-centered technology and equipment. When integrated with exoskeletons, cybersecurity, and robotics, AI presents an opportunity to deliver effective technology and enhance productivity. This cannot be done safely without considering the humans that interact with these systems and machines.
Delivering practical, usable, and evidence-based solutions to the challenges various industries face, ErgoX provides a unique opportunity to bring together the field for collaboration and guidance.

Dept. of Labor Seeks Input of Expert Industrial-Organizational Psychologists
The O*NET Data Collection Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, is seeking the input of expert Industrial-Organizational Psychologists. As the nation's most comprehensive source of occupational data, O*NET is a public resource for millions of job seekers, employers, veterans, educators, and students at www.onetonline.org. HFES members have the opportunity to participate in this important initiative and your participation will help ensure that the complexities of your profession are described accurately in the O*NET database for the American public.
You are considered an Occupation Expert if you meet the following criteria:
- You fit the role description
-
You are currently active in the occupation (practicing, supervising, teaching and/or training) and based in the U.S.
-
You have at least 5 years of experience with the occupation. (Includes those who are now supervising, training, or teaching IF you have at least one year of practice during your career)
How to Participate:
If you meet these criteria and are interested in participating, please contact Matt Robinson at RTI International, the O*NET data collection contractor, at mrobinson@onet.rti.org or (919) 926-6635.

Alliance of American Organizations for the Practice of HF/E Formed
HFES is proud to partner with the Foundation for Professional Ergonomics (FPE) and the Board of Certification in Professional Ergonomics (BCPE) in an Alliance for HF/E practice. Unified by shared understanding and vision, the Alliance is a grassroots movement and partnership that advances the HF/E profession.
The Alliance will be coordinating joint activities in 2021 and beyond. Discussions are ongoing regarding outreach to businesses, industry, professional groups, and government to promote the field and professional development of its practitioners by encouraging board certification. Growth plans include joining with kindred organizations in ergonomics, user experience and others.
For more information, contact HFES Executive Director Steven Kemp at skemp@hfes.org.

Calling all Fellows--Submit to the Posters with Fellows Session
Members of the HFES College of Fellows are invited to participate in the Posters With Fellows session at the 2021 HFES Annual Meeting, October 4 - 7, 2021 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel.
The genesis behind this session was to give HFES members and students the opportunity to interact with some of the most distinguished colleagues the Society has to offer (you!) in a low-key setting. The last several years of Poster With Fellows sessions have been exceptionally well received and highly attended, with a lot of positive feedback from Fellows and attendees alike.
The goal is to raise the profile of the Fellows and give students and your HF/E colleagues an opportunity to interact with the thought leaders of our profession. Your participation is crucial to the success of this format, and we would greatly appreciate your willingness to participate, even if you have participated in past years. If you haven't participated in the past, please consider doing so this year, as it's a wonderful way to engage with the HF/E community. There is no review process for this invited session - just show up with your poster, and then enjoy!
If you wish to participate, please complete the intent to present form by August 31 so we can reserve you a spot.

Submissions for University Lab Posters is Now Open
HFES invites university labs conducting research and application on human factors/ergonomics to display a poster at our 65th International Annual Meeting in Baltimore, October 4-7. The purpose of this showcase is to demonstrate the variety of HF/E educational and research programs, not to describe specific research projects.
University lab posters may be attended by lab representatives or they may be unattended. There is no proceedings paper associated with lab poster displays. Each lab (or school, if multiple labs from the same school wish to display a poster) is allocated 1/2 of one side of a double-sided poster board measuring 4 feet high by 8 feet wide. Posters dimensions may not exceed 42” x 42” as two posters will share each side of the poster board for a total of four posters per board.
A limited number of spaces are available. Details concerning location, dates and times of poster displays will follow in a confirmation notice that will be sent by September 20, 2021.
Poster display space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Confirmation and instructions for displaying your lab poster will be sent via e-mail to the contact indicated on the intent form.
Required Information:
- Name of lab and university
- Name, telephone number, and e-mail address of person responsible for the poster
- Brief description of the lab
If you have any questions pertaining to the short course, please do not hesitate to contact info@hfes.org.

Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making on Human-AI Teaming
Building upon advances in machine learning, software that depends on artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced across a wide spectrum of systems, including autonomous vehicles, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, aviation, and military systems. AI systems may be unreliable or insufficiently robust, however, due to challenges in the development of reliable and robust AI algorithms based on datasets that are noisy and incomplete, the lack of causal models needed for projecting future outcomes, the presence of undetected biases, and noisy or faulty sensor inputs. Therefore, it is anticipated that for the foreseeable future, AI systems will need to operate in conjunction with humans in order to perform their tasks, and often as a part of a larger team of humans and AI systems. Further, AI systems may be instantiated with different levels of autonomy, at different times, and for different types of tasks or circumstances, creating a wide design space for consideration.
This special issue will cover new research designed to better integrate people with AI in ways that will allow them to function effectively.
Manuscripts are due by October 1, 2021.

In Memoriam--Richard J. Hornick
HFES Fellow and Past-President Richard J. Hornick, a distinguished leader of the HFES and of our profession, passed away on July 11, 2021.
Following completion of his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology at Purdue University in 1960, Richard held a number of leadership positions related to human factors design with organizations that included North American Aviation, Litton Industries, and Hughes Aircraft Company. His work supported efforts in areas such as Navy ship design, command and control systems, and the Apollo space program.
Richard was an active and vital leader within the HFES and contributed enormously to the Society through extensive service that spanned a period of almost 40 years. He was elected to all three major Society offices, including President, Secretary-Treasurer, and At-Large Member of the Executive Council, the latter for a remarkable six terms. All told, Richard was a member of the Executive Council for 24 years, and is the only person in the history of the Society to serve on the Council for that length of time.
Richard was truly one-of-a-kind. An accomplished and dedicated leader, he was a major force within the Society and our profession over the course of his remarkable career. Even more importantly, he was both a highly respected colleague and a wonderful friend. Those of us who were fortunate enough to have known him will miss him terribly.
To learn more about his role in the HF/E field and his tenure with HFES, please see more here.
