Dept. of Labor Seeks Input of Expert Industrial-Organizational Psychologists

The O*NET Data Collection Program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, is seeking the input of expert Industrial-Organizational Psychologists. As the nation's most comprehensive source of occupational data, O*NET is a public resource for millions of job seekers, employers, veterans, educators, and students at www.onetonline.org. HFES members have the opportunity to participate in this important initiative and your participation will help ensure that the complexities of your profession are described accurately in the O*NET database for the American public.

You are considered an Occupation Expert if you meet the following criteria:
  • You fit the role description
  • You are currently active in the occupation (practicing, supervising, teaching and/or training) and based in the U.S.
  • You have at least 5 years of experience with the occupation. (Includes those who are now supervising, training, or teaching IF you have at least one year of practice during your career)

How to Participate:
If you meet these criteria and are interested in participating, please contact Matt Robinson at RTI International, the O*NET data collection contractor, at mrobinson@onet.rti.org or (919) 926-6635.
Call for HFES International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare Track Chairs

The HFES International Symposium on Human Factors and Ergonomics in Healthcare is looking for track chairs for next year's event taking place from March 20-24, 2022 in New Orleans! We have two positions for each of our five tracks (10 total). We are looking for dedicated individuals who play a role in current research and application to healthcare systems. If interested, please reach out to Tony Andre and Joe Keebler. We ask for a copy of your current CV, designation of the track you would be interested in chairing. Responsibilities include structuring your track, inviting potential speakers, managing reviewers, and attending the symposium next spring in New Orleans!

NOTE: This is a call for track chairs, not track committee review members (which will come later). We are looking for "connected" people who can form a coherent program and attract the best presenters.
Calling all Fellows--Submit to the Posters with Fellows Session

Members of the HFES College of Fellows are invited to participate in the Posters With Fellows session at the 2021 HFES Annual Meeting, October 4 - 7, 2021 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel.

The genesis behind this session was to give HFES members and students the opportunity to interact with some of the most distinguished colleagues the Society has to offer (you!) in a low-key setting. The last several years of Poster With Fellows sessions have been exceptionally well received and highly attended, with a lot of positive feedback from Fellows and attendees alike.

The goal is to raise the profile of the Fellows and give students and your HF/E colleagues an opportunity to interact with the thought leaders of our profession. Your participation is crucial to the success of this format, and we would greatly appreciate your willingness to participate, even if you have participated in past years. If you haven't participated in the past, please consider doing so this year, as it's a wonderful way to engage with the HF/E community. There is no review process for this invited session - just show up with your poster, and then enjoy!

If you wish to participate, please complete the intent to present form by August 31 so we can reserve you a spot.

Submissions for University Lab Posters is Now Open

HFES invites university labs conducting research and application on human factors/ergonomics to display a poster at our 65th International Annual Meeting in Baltimore, October 4-7. The purpose of this showcase is to demonstrate the variety of HF/E educational and research programs, not to describe specific research projects.

University lab posters may be attended by lab representatives or they may be unattended. There is no proceedings paper associated with lab poster displays. Each lab (or school, if multiple labs from the same school wish to display a poster) is allocated 1/2 of one side of a double-sided poster board measuring 4 feet high by 8 feet wide. Posters dimensions may not exceed 42” x 42” as two posters will share each side of the poster board for a total of four posters per board.

A limited number of spaces are available. Details concerning location, dates and times of poster displays will follow in a confirmation notice that will be sent by September 20, 2021

Poster display space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Confirmation and instructions for displaying your lab poster will be sent via e-mail to the contact indicated on the intent form.

Required Information:
  • Name of lab and university
  • Name, telephone number, and e-mail address of person responsible for the poster
  • Brief description of the lab

If you have any questions pertaining to the short course, please do not hesitate to contact info@hfes.org

Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making on Human-AI Teaming

Building upon advances in machine learning, software that depends on artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced across a wide spectrum of systems, including autonomous vehicles, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, aviation, and military systems. AI systems may be unreliable or insufficiently robust, however, due to challenges in the development of reliable and robust AI algorithms based on datasets that are noisy and incomplete, the lack of causal models needed for projecting future outcomes, the presence of undetected biases, and noisy or faulty sensor inputs. Therefore, it is anticipated that for the foreseeable future, AI systems will need to operate in conjunction with humans in order to perform their tasks, and often as a part of a larger team of humans and AI systems. Further, AI systems may be instantiated with different levels of autonomy, at different times, and for different types of tasks or circumstances, creating a wide design space for consideration.

This special issue will cover new research designed to better integrate people with AI in ways that will allow them to function effectively.

Manuscripts are due by October 1, 2021.

Volunteer of the Month: Michael Clamann

Michael Clamann is a Senior Human Factors Engineer at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center. He first joined HFES as a graduate student in 2000 and currently serves as a Policy Fellow with the Government Relations Committee. His main research interest is in human-automation interaction in complex systems. In his current role at UNC, he leads projects related to how emerging automated and autonomous vehicle technologies influence safety.

His research in vehicle automation has brought him in front of state transportation policymakers to discuss automation safety, and he values being able to volunteer with a committee that helps him become more proficient at advocating for human factors with these groups.

Michael’s first volunteer experience with HFES was reporting on the career panel assembled at the 46th Annual Meeting back in 2002. He was assigned to attend that year’s career panel and draft a conference proceeding about the recommendations made by the panelists to those seeking information about career advancement and navigating the human factors job market. This experience motivated him to learn more about the opportunities available to volunteers.
