Greetings Maine Chapter HFMA Members
Message from the President

I hope you are all enjoying the beautiful Maine summer that has finally arrived!

First of all, I would like to thank our chapter's volunteers, sponsors and members for a very successful past year! Maine Chapter of HFMA, one of only 18 out of 68 chapters across the country, achieved the perfect performance score as a chapter for the 2016-2017 year! In addition, Kathleen Carmichael, as our chapter's Past President, and I recently attended the HFMA National Institute Conference (ANI) in Orlando, Florida where our chapter received the following awards based on the 2016-2017 year's performance:

* Bronze Award of Excellence for Membership Growth and Retention
* Gold Award of Excellence for Certification

The chapter's success depends on our volunteers and we are fortunate to have a very engaged group of talented individuals who serve on the Board of Directors, participate in various chapter committees, and who go above and beyond to serve the chapter in order to continuously improve our member experience and maximize the value of the HFMA membership. To continue to build on this success, we excited to introduce a new Member Engagement program: "Get Engaged! Get Rewarded!" Under this program, members can earn points towards free education programming by getting engaged in the chapter activities. To learn more about the program, please visit the Membership section of the Maine Chapter of HFMA website (link the "membership word to this link - Don't wait, get engaged and be rewarded!

Chapter leaders and volunteers have recently participated in a planning session where we discussed the feedback provided in our most recent membership satisfaction survey, the successful and not so successful practices from past years, as well as many new ideas. In the next year, we will continue to focus on improving our education programming by bringing in dynamic speakers and providing a variety of relevant and timely education. In addition, we will be focusing on offering more opportunities for you to network with your peers and help you stay connected with other healthcare financial professionals in the region. We are pleased to announce that we are planning a summer outing towards the end of August, where members will be invited to bring families, friends and pets to participate in a short fundraising walk to benefit a local charity. Stay tuned for further announcements!

I am excited to announce that our education calendar for the year has been released and is available on the Maine Chapter of HFMA website under the Education section (link to this URL We will soon be opening registration for the Annual Meeting that will be held on September 14th and 15th at the Hollywood Casino Hotel in Bangor. In addition, we are excited to announce that the Maine Chapter will be offering a brand new program this year, Women in Leadership Forum, which will be held on October 20th, 2017 at the Maple Hill Farm Bed & Breakfast in Hallowell. We have lined up an exciting group of speakers who will present on a variety of leadership topics to help female professionals propel their careers forward. Save the date and watch for future announcements related to this program that will be coming out shortly!

I look forward to serving as the Maine Chapter President for the next year and encourage you to contact me or any member of chapter leadership with questions, concerns or ideas you may have on improving our chapter. You can reach me at or by calling me at 207.622.7566. I appreciate the continued support of the chapter from all of you and I am looking forward to another exciting year with the HFMA family!

Today's senior living providers must ensure that their mission and vision for the future are built on a healthy financial plan and structure. Here are some things you should know to build just that.

America's senior living industry includes a diverse range of organizations - from skilled and long-term-care providers to assisted living organizations, retirement communities, community health organizations, and more - all operating in an unusually complex, fast-changing environment.

Yet one thing they have in common is the need to plan effectively for the future. Is your organization ready? Whatever your vision for the years ahead, the single most important question your organization needs to answer is "Do we have a realistic financial plan and structures in place to support the vision?"

Supreme Court Heals Hospital Issue: ERISA-Exempt Church Plans Don't Need to be Set Up By a Church

by Withum's Healthcare Services Team

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court reasoned based on statutory interpretation that religiously-affiliated hospitals can run ERISA-exempt church plans. The decision could affect retirement and pension benefits to more than 300,000 workers.

The Employee Retirement Security Act ("ERISA") definition of a "church plan,"[1] and whether a religiously-affiliated hospital that has a retirement plan can meet this definition despite not being established by a church, has been a hotly debated issue. The distinction is that a qualifying "church plan" is exempt from certain Internal Revenue Code ("IRC" or the "Code") legal and reporting requirements.
