Presentation Summary:"Principles of Quality Improvement in Healthcare: Not Just for Clinicians."

Improving HOW leads to improving How Much - don't just crack the whip. Using the Deming 85/15 Rule, design changes so everyone participates and benefits from improvement. The primary goal of a PDSA cycle is understanding the microsystem, while the effects of a series of PDSA cycles is improvement. Learning Objectives:
  • Understand the IHI approach to QI
  • Understand and describe core QI skills
  • Come away with a plan for self-improvement in QI
Speaker Bio:
Kevin Shannon, MD, MPH, first learned QI from Paul Batalden and Gene Nelson at Dartmouth Medical School. Since then he has applied the principles in the United States in a variety of outpatient practice settings, and in Africa in hospital and public health settings. He is now an associate professor at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, teaching the required Preventive Medicine clerkship, where all medical students study and apply the principles of QI. He is the Medical Director of Quality and Safety at SAC Health System in San Bernardino, CA.
