HGSFS June Newsletter

Dear Horizons at GSFS Community,

We are just a few weeks out from summer programming beginning, and this summer is going to be amazing! We will have weekly field trips to the African American Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Briar Bush Nature Center to name a few; weekly culturally-relevant assemblies from Los Bomberos de la Calle plus Karen Smith and the Drummers; and four special’s classes throughout the six weeks of programming including karate, yoga, art, and theater.

We are still hiring for four lifeguards/swim instructors and will pay for certification. If you know of anyone who would be a good fit, the job listing can be found here. We are also hiring a security officer and floater. These positions have not been posted yet, so if you know anyone who would be a good fit please have them email mquarrie@greenestreetfriends.org. We appreciate you sharing this with your networks! We are also looking for volunteers - to learn more and sign up please fill out this Google form

Our annual Horizons Giving Day was Thursday, May 4th with a goal of $50,000! We surpassed that number and raised $67,874 with the help of over 100 donors! Those funds will pay for entire summer of swimming lessons for all of our students (three instructional lessons a week), an entire summer of food for all students (breakfast, lunch, and a snack each day), and an entire summer of special classes for all students (karate, yoga, theater, and art). This is an urgent moment in education as schools and districts are searching for the best ways to support students’ pandemic recovery, and it is well known that barriers to learning have disproportionately affected resource oppressed communities. NOW is the time to invest in high quality programs like Horizons to impact students’ recovery. This summer’s programming is solely due to the generosity and support of our network. Thank you for supporting our effort to fill our students’ summer with joy, encouragement and growth!

We also want to thank everyone who attended our First Annual Garden Party at Awbury Arboretum! It was an incredible event for a good cause, and the weather was absolutely beautiful. We look forward to hosting another amazing event next year!
