HGSFS November Newsletter

Dear Horizons at GSFS Community,

We want to share the exciting school year programming that is underway for our Horizons students and families!

We are hosting a monthly homework hour overseen by leadership from Horizons where our students will meet at GSFS in the new Armat Learning Commons space. They will bring their homework and have a quiet place to complete it with the possibility for help from Horizons’ leadership.

We launched our Book Club for our students, and invited each grade to read one book together. The following are the books we asked our students in each grade to read:

  • PreK - I Am Enough: I Believe I Can
  • Kinder - The Brown Crayon by Michael Williams
  • 1st - I Promise by Lebron James
  • 2nd - Hey Black Child by Useni Eugene Perkins
  • 3rd - This Is Our History: An Inspirational Story about Africans & African American History, Acceptance and Courage (Humansville) by Virtuous Nyamesem Cornwall
  • 4th - Clayton Byrd Goes Underground by Williams-Garcia, Rita
  • 5th - The Dreamer by Pam Muñoz Ryan
  • 6th - Buck by M.K. Asante

We invite you to read along with our students and participate in our

Book Club as well!

We also work to serve our families during the school year. We are hosting a monthly parent processing meeting led by a licensed clinician and our Family Engagement Specialist. This event allows our families the space to discuss everything from mental health to self care with the guidance of a licensed professional. We hosted an informational session on IEP’s/504’s/Gifted Programming by professionals who serve as current vice principals, former school counselors, and special education professors amongst other accolades. We are working on a school choice information session for our Fourth Grade students who will be entering Middle School next year as well as one for our oldest students who are beginning to plan for their high school careers.

We've also planned a few fun events for our families to attend. We are going to see a special screening of the new Black Panther movie during opening weekend on November 13th. We will go see a special screening of “Strange World” with the five other Horizons sites on December 10th.

We are hosting our annual Friendsgiving event on Sunday, November 20th from 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at GSFS. Please see the attached flier to find ways to get involved. Finally, we are working with our Board of Directors on a fun Christmas event.

Next term, we are going to partner with GSFS to participate in a day of service for MLK Day and are looking at ways to celebrate Black History Month.

As we continue to plan and host these school year program offerings, please feel free to follow along or participate in any way that you see is appropriate. We appreciate you continuing to support our Horizons’ program, and hope that you will continue to help us as we work towards fully building out our program.

With Thanks,
