Renee's Reflection

Renee Stephens, Director of Membership and Children's Ministries

“Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.” Psalm 42:7

This past Sunday, the kids in Sunday school had the joy of sorting the food donations for CAC. It was a beautiful, coordinated chaos as kids were grabbing bags of food and yelling to each other “I got tuna!” “I have corn!” “Tomatoes, tomatoes, I have the tomatoes!!” Older kids took charge saying, “Ok we have to organize this pile.” Three of the oldest begged me to stay and finish even when it was time for us to end. Even the youngest enjoyed sorting like foods together and watching the piles grow higher and higher. By the end of the class, a rumor had spread through the little kids that each pile of food was a kingdom and so they would say to each other, “take this to the cereal kingdom!” The joy poured out from their every word and movement, but it was more than that too. They knew the work that they were doing was meaningful and they already knew how to do it. They were comfortable.

A lot can be said about comfort but ultimately that is the calling we have in our relationship with God. “Deep calls to deep…” Our souls come from God and know God but our physical selves need a bit more practice. The more that we practice feeling, hearing, and sitting in the presence of God, the easier it is to recognize. That is what has gotten me through my most difficult times. When it feels like your entire world has crumbled down around you, you don’t have the capacity to learn or practice something new. You fall back on what feels comfortable.

So, I invite you to make your life an offering that mirrors what we had in Sunday school last week. Let God be your place of comfort. When life is easy, pour your heart into practicing being in the presence of God, so that when the road gets difficult, you fall back on your comfort. Life is full of unexpected highs and lows, and we are so lucky that we have a God who sees us through them both. A God who pours out grace abundantly and strengthens us in all goodness. So, join us this Lenten season for one of our many offerings (the CAC food drive, the Lenten series with Temple Sinai, the Women’s Evening of Inspiration, Young Adult egg stuffing party, Friends of Music and more!) and let your soul be nourished in God.

CAC Lenten Food Drive Showing Good Results!

The second week of Lent showed a significant improvement in activity for our CAC Lenten food drive!

So far, Holy Innocents’ contributions have produced:

  • 450 pounds of food, equating to $1,175.
  • $5,000 in donations, equating to 2,793 pounds of food.

Thank you to all who contributed both food and money to our efforts during the first two weeks!

This past Sunday, the youth Sunday School classes helped sort the donated food items. Renee’s reflections perfectly capture the young ones’ joy and enthusiasm as they learned very important lessons in giving to others. We hope their spirit exemplifies what we can do as a parish to meet our goals.

We are one-third of the way to our monetary goal of $15,000 that Bill set for us as a parish. Every dollar that is raised is put to use exponentially by CAC as they can purchase items in bulk from suppliers for a discounted price. And every can or bag of food we donate goes directly onto their pantry shelves for their shoppers.

Here are a few reminders:

  • If you purchase food online, enter Holy Innocents in the “Company Name” block during checkout.
  • If you donate money, please send or deliver the check to the church so we can determine how many pounds of food your donation is worth.
  • Drop off donated food items in the Bishop Commons

Food items are most needed:

If you’ve donated, thank you for your support of CAC. If not, please join us in our Lenten observance and help our neighbors in need. Look for weekly updates and volunteer opportunities. For more information check our website here, or contact Charles Crosby at charles@corepm.net or Jan Paul at janpaul1005@gmail.com.

Burn the Mortgage

Sunday, March 30, 2025 at 11:15 AM

We have almost paid off the note from our 2012 renovation (the balance is just under $10,000). So, it is time to celebrate this big moment. After the 10:15 service on Sunday, March 30, we will go outside to the luminarium (the big cauldron in the memorial garden) and burn the loan documents. Since it will be Lent, we encourage you to write down things you also want to be done with - and cast those burdens, sins, injuries, grudges, and worries into the fire. We will share some prayers (it is the Episcopal Church, we always have a liturgy), burn the mortgage and our burdens, and then celebrate with some "hot" themed food together. Join us for a celebration!

Formation

This week Bill and Stewart lead the conversation in our continuing study of the book of Acts. Join us as we delve deeper into Chapter 4 together.

The disciples are crystal clear about what they believe and are willing to suffer and die for it. Today’s question is simple: What does it mean to be a Christian? Our Jewish sisters and brothers have regular meetings to discuss what it is to be Jewish. Should we be wrestling with this question today? What are our lines in the sand? What really matters? What is adiaphora? That is, what is something indifferent or unconcerning? Join us for a conversation about being Christian and facing the world.

Easter Flowers & Music

Help us prepare for a beautiful and meaningful celebration of Easter! We invite you to make a donation to support Easter flowers and music. You may dedicate your gift In Memory of or In Thanksgiving for a loved one. These dedications will be included in our Easter bulletins as a meaningful way to honor your loved ones. To donate, please use this online form or the envelopes in the pew. When donating, please use the memo line to indicate how you would like your donation to printed in the bulletins. Deadline for donations is April 10th. For more information, please contact Renee Stephens at rstephens@holyinnocents.org
