Many Voices, One Spirit

Emily Badacour

The coming Sundays offer our parish a meaningful opportunity to reflect on unity, community, and the work of the Holy Spirit among us. On Pentecost, we hear the story from Acts of the Holy Spirit descending upon the disciples as people from many nations gathered in Jerusalem. Scripture tells us that each person heard the Good News proclaimed in their own language. It is a story often called the “birthday of the Church,” and from the very beginning, the Church was multilingual, multicultural, and beautifully diverse.

This Sunday, we will hear the first lesson read in five different languages; this is a reminder that God’s message is not limited by language, culture, or background. Even when we do not understand every word spoken, we are united through the Spirit who speaks to all people. In a world where differences can so often divide us, Pentecost reminds us that diversity can instead be a reflection of God’s creativity and grace.

The following Sunday, we will gather for a joint service with our Spanish-speaking congregation as we welcome Bishop Wright and celebrate Confirmation. This too feels deeply connected to the spirit of Pentecost. Confirmation marks a public affirmation of faith and a strengthening through the Holy Spirit, calling each person more fully into the life of the Church.

It is fitting that we celebrate these moments together–across languages, generations, and worship traditions. Trinity Sunday reminds us that even within God’s very nature, there is relationship, unity, and community. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct, yet one. In much the same way, the Church is made up of many people and many stories, yet we are united as one Body in Christ.

May these Sundays remind us that the Church is always larger, richer, and more beautiful than our own individual experience of it. And may the Holy Spirit continue to draw us closer to one another in faith, hope, and love.

We hope you will join us this Sunday as we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit! Wear red, enjoy donuts and fellowship before the service, and help us welcome Rutherford Hammel through the sacrament of baptism.

Summer Forum Series:
The Bible With and Without Jesus

June 7-July 19, 9:00 AM

Join us this summer for a thought-provoking formation series exploring The Bible With and Without Jesus by renowned scholars Amy-Jill Levine and Marc Zvi Brettler. Together, we will examine some of the most familiar passages from the Hebrew Bible and discover how these texts have been understood in both Jewish and Christian traditions across history.

Through engaging discussion, prayer, and reflection, we will explore stories and themes such as creation, Adam and Eve, Jonah, Isaiah’s Suffering Servant, and Psalm 22. This series invites us to deepen our understanding of Scripture by considering its historical context, literary richness, and theological interpretations, while reflecting on how these ancient texts continue to speak into our lives today.

Each session will include guided discussion questions, opening and closing prayers, and interactive activities designed to foster meaningful conversation and spiritual growth. Whether you are new to Bible study or a lifelong learner, this series offers a welcoming space to encounter Scripture in fresh and inspiring ways.
