Embracing the Unexpected:

A Lesson from the Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday afternoon October 6th, our youth group, with the help of the 4th and 5th graders, hosted what we thought would be a simple Blessing of the Animals service. We expected a small gathering of about 15 guests, so we carefully prepared favors, printed bulletins, and purchased decorations, anticipating a cozy event with a few animals in attendance.

But, as is often the case, what we had planned didn’t quite align with what God had in store.

We set up outside, arranging tents and water bowls for our furry friends. It was perfect—until the heat became unbearable. So, we quickly pivoted, moving to a shaded spot in front of the church, thinking this would be a comfortable space for our small group. However, more and more families showed up, and soon, our crowd had grown far beyond our original plans. Over 80 guests filled the space with their furry family members!

At that moment, we had to adjust yet again, relocating the service to the parish hall to accommodate everyone.

It’s easy to feel stressed or overwhelmed when things don’t go as planned. Doubt can creep in, making us wonder if we’re doing the right thing, or if we’ve prepared enough. In those moments, it’s important to remember that God’s plans often look different from our own—and for a reason.

In Proverbs 19:21, we are reminded: “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Though we anticipated a small gathering, God had something bigger in mind. What seemed like a series of logistical challenges turned out to be an incredible opportunity for our community to come together in a way we hadn’t expected.

This experience encouraged us to embrace the unexpected, trusting that God is working even when things seem out of control. It also taught us the importance of prayer in moments of doubt. When we feel uncertain or overwhelmed, praying through those feelings allows us to find peace and direction, leaning on God’s purpose rather than our own understanding.

The Blessing of the Animals was not just an event; it became a reminder that God’s blessings often come in ways we don’t foresee. By staying flexible, praying through the uncertainty, and trusting His plan, we were able to experience something far greater than we had imagined.

As we reflect on this, let’s carry the lesson forward: when things don’t go as expected, don’t resist the change—embrace it, pray through it, and watch how God’s purpose unfolds in ways you never anticipated.

Volunteer with the College Connection Program

The College Connection Program is a wonderful opportunity for our church community to support and encourage our college students during their time away from home. Volunteers in this program are paired with one or two college students and send small care packages three times a year to remind them that they are loved and cared for by their church family. Packages can include anything from gift cards and candy to personal notes of encouragement—whatever you feel will brighten their day.

With 31 college students currently enrolled, we are seeking several more volunteers to ensure each student is covered. Your involvement will make a significant impact and help us continue this important ministry of connection and support! Please contact Megan Atkinson if you would like to get involved.
