Senior Consultant

Position Summary
The Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) is conducting a search to recruit a Consultant for the Journalism initiative on Gender-based Violence (JiG). This will be a full-time consultancy with a start date of July 1, 2021. The candidate must be authorized to work in the United States but may be based elsewhere. The position requires that a portion of each workday overlap with the East Coast time zone.
 
The JiG Senior Consultant will join a team of full-time staff, consultants, and advisors who are engaged in an innovative initiative furthering CWGL’s work toward the elimination of gender-based violence (GBV). The Consultant will be responsible for: launching, promoting, and marketing a newly created standard-setting guide (developed by journalists for journalists) among journalists, media outlets, schools of journalism, and relevant international, regional and national institutions; maintaining and improving a multimedia digital tool for journalists reporting on GBV; working with women journalists to develop a safety and accountability strategy for women journalists reporting on GBV; interacting with different U.N. women’s human rights mechanisms and other relevant international bodies for the protection and safety of women journalists; setting up a monitoring and evaluation system and indicators for the initiative; and, coordinating with CWGL’s program team to advance its work on women’s human rights globally. The successful candidate will have an essential role in shaping and advancing the initiative, including the work focusing on the safety of women journalists, as well as networking, training, and speaking on behalf of JiG and CWGL in national and international arenas.

For this position, CWGL is seeking a talented media professional who is a seasoned journalist with experience covering women’s issues and the issue of GBV. Fluency in English, direct experience working with marginalized communities, and knowledge of digital platforms are essential requirements for the position. Fluency in another language and media reporting and/or work experience in the international sphere are preferred. The Consultant will report to CWGL’s Senior Director of Program and Global Advocacy.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Market print and digital versions of a newly created guide for GBV reporting
  • Support and coordinate related international and national workshops, training,s and other events in different countries, including in the U.S.
  • Maintain and regularly update the JiG website with new content
  • Work with web developers to create an App for the newly created GBV-guide 
  • Develop and expand JiG’s social media presence and influence
  • Organize annual (or bi-annual) convenings of an international advisory group
  • Convene women journalists and organize different events such as consultations, training, briefings, and workshops
  • Integrate JiG’s work within CWGL’s overall program strategy, especially in connection with the relevant objectives and activities of the Global 16 Days Campaign
  • Support the development of indicators to measure the improvement of GBV media coverage
  • Organize webinars (with partners) to promote journalistic standards for and impactful coverage of GBV
  • Coordinate efforts with relevant U.N. women’s human rights bodies and mechanisms to promote the safety of women journalists 
  • Write and publish articles for JiG
  • Represent JiG at global and regional convenings and public events
 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities - Excellent writing and communications skills (English); exceptional editing skills; understanding of current issues and trends relating to GBV against women, social justice, and human rights; ability to work flexibly with a diverse team in multiple time-zones; ability to work well under deadline pressures; availability for evening meetings and international travel.
 
Required Education/Work Experience - Masters or equivalent experience in journalism and/or media; a minimum of five years of experience working with a team within an institution; demonstrated experience managing complex projects; experience reporting on gender-based violence and/or related issues in diverse political and cultural settings; experience in developing digital media/communication tools; and ability to work with diverse international teams, networks, media professionals, community leaders/advocates (especially in the field of human/women rights and media and gender).
