Latest Portal Updates:

  1. As of August 1, 2024, Chemistry and Hematology lab data, reported from Norfolk General Hospital, is now also being sent to the Ontario Laboratories Information System (OLIS), via ClinicalConnect. These report types are in addition to Blood Bank and Pathology that began sending in April 2024 as previously communicated. Thank you to the team at NGH for their work and collaboration on this project!
  2. On August 14, 2024, a number of updates were successfully completed to the existing data integration between ClinicalConnect and Hamilton Health Sciences' Epic Hospital Information System. While these updates didn't result in significant changes to the user experience, they were still required and an important win for both teams!
  3. It's expected that work will be complete to integrate ClinicalConnect with the new Hospital Information Systems that are being implemented by Bluewater Health and Niagara Health in the coming weeks. These projects will not impact the ClinicalConnect user experience, but do mark an important milestone in the ongoing evolution of the portal.

Important Updates about the Access Governance System (AGS): AGS is a supporting online system to ClinicalConnect, used at Participant Organizations to manage access to ClinicalConnect, as well as perform mandatory semi-annual attestations to confirm organizations' ongoing compliance with the ClinicalConnect Terms & Conditions. AGS is in the process of being upgraded to a new platform and is expected to go live in early 2025. The functionality and user interface remains very similar to the current version. Further communications to the AGS user community will follow later this Fall, but in the meantime - don't forget that semi-annual attestations, including the Annual Compliance Attestation for Organizations, begin tomorrow (Friday, November 1, 2024). Complete your attestations as soon as you're prompted by email to do using the Access Governance System - and thanks in advance for your cooperation in fulfilling this requirement as Participants in ClinicalConnect!

Improving Access to
Specialist Advice

The HITS eHealth Office continues to support the deployment of eConsult in the HNHB region. eConsult enables physicians, nurse practitioners, and midwives to ask clinical questions to a specialist electronically and receive a response within days, often eliminating the need for an in-person referral. In Ontario, there are 4,000+ active primary care providers and 1,000+ active specialists using eConsult today! Interested in joining eConsult? Complete the intake form today!

Latest Updates:

  • eConsult Case Management: Automation & User Experience

To enhance the user experience, eConsults can now be sent with unlimited characters in all text fields, and saving eConsults in draft has been extended from two to 30 seconds, to avoid screen and cursor interruptions.

As well, to ensure timely advice is provided, eConsult senders receive automatic notices when their case is approaching seven days without a response from the specialist, after which point the case may be automatically re-assigned to another specialist. This more automated process is also helping to avoid other cases being assigned to a specialist who may not be able to respond, by updating their availability to Out of Office. While the notices are automated, the HITS eHealth Office and the eConsult Centre of Excellence continue to be available to assist with case management and ongoing availability settings.

  • Specialist-to-Specialist eConsults

The most common eConsult pathway is primary care providers sending their clinical question to a specialist. Increasingly however, specialists are using eConsult to ask questions of each other. To support this use case, the HITS eHealth Office, in partnership with the eConsult Centre of Excellence, is interested to learn more from specialist users who are benefitting from the ability to ask clinical questions between specialties.

If specialists have colleagues who would either like to send eConsults to other specialists as described above, or provide eConsult advice to primary care providers, please share this expression of interest form so they too can join the eConsult program.

Specialist-to-Specialist eConsult case examples, assistance with case management, and ongoing eConsult user feedback can be sent to eConsult@HITSeHealth.ca. We look forward to hearing from you!
