HJSHS Students Invited as Participants at American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls

Jasper County School District has an impressive number of leaders-in-training, including students Leah Gerald and Sha'Kiyah Jefferson from Hardeeville Junior & Senior High School. These two exceptional students have been selected to attend the prestigious American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State, which is a leadership and citizenship training program. The program will be held at Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC from June 9-15, 2024. 

American Legion Auxiliary Palmetto Girls State is not just an ordinary program but an immersive experience that provides high school students with a hands-on application of government and citizenship. Leah and Sha'Kiyah will participate in mock political activities at all levels of government by creating a mythical state of "Palmetto." This program will educate them about state and local government, citizenship, and public service principles.

At ALA Palmetto Girls State, Leah and Sha'Kiyah will engage in political campaigns, elections, and political processes to simulate real-life scenarios. This approach will ensure that they have a deep understanding of citizenship and public service principles. 

Hardeeville Junior & Senior High School is proud of Leah Gerald and Sha'Kiyah Jefferson for earning this fantastic opportunity. Congratulations to both students!

Tennis Courts Resurfacing Project on the Hardeeville Campus

The tennis courts on the Hardeeville Campus are currently being resurfaced, resulting in a stunning improvement.

SSC and Public Tennis Inc. partnered to secure a $30,000 grant from the US Tennis Association. We expect to complete the work by May 2024. JCSD appreciates the support from SSC, Public Tennis Inc., and the United States Tennis Association. Thank you for investing in our scholars.

Superintendent Dr. Rechel Anderson is On the Move Across the State

Superintendent Dr. Rechel Anderson visited with the Honorable Ellen Weaver, State Superintendent, and Mr. Matthew Ferguson on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

Following this visit, Dr. Anderson headed over to the Statehouse. There, she met with Representative William 'Bill' Hager. She also had an opportunity to meet with Representative Terry Alexander. 

Our state legislators, the SC Department of Education, and the Jasper County School District work together to ensure that EVERY child in Jasper County has a Student-Centered…Future-Focused School District. 

RES National Beta Club Induction

Ridgeland Elementary School Students had an amazing National Beta Club induction ceremony on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Nineteen RES scholars earned induction into the National Beta Club.

Principal Renata Johnson-Green asked us to offer a big shout-out to Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Higgins, and Mrs F. Green for organizing a great event. Principal Johnson-Green adds, "Our scholars did an exceptional job & the parental support was amazing!"

In 2022, Ridgeland Elementary School was named a National Beta School of Distinction.

National Beta recognizes outstanding achievement, promotes character and social responsibility, encourages service involvement to school and community, and fosters leadership skills. National Junior Beta includes grades 4-8 and National Senior Beta includes grades 9-12.

District Leaders Attend State of Jasper County Breakfast

JCSD’s leadership team recently attended the State of Jasper County Breakfast hosted by the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce. The purpose of the event was to promote collaboration between Jasper County’s various organizations and business leaders. All attendees agreed that Jasper County is a unique and exceptional place. Dr. Anderson and her team are dedicated to maintaining a Student-Centered…Future-Focused Jasper County School District.

RSAE Art Students Participate in and Visit Claflin University Art Exhibition

We are proud to have some truly talented artists in our community! Four RSAE art students, Medalyn Cisneros, Alondra Flores, Madeleine Ramirez, and Andrea Wright, have submitted their original art pieces for the Claflin University High School Art Exhibition. This annual event is a great platform for showcasing artwork from all over South Carolina, and it will run through March 21, 2024, at the Arthur Rose Museum located on the Claflin University campus.

2024 Total Eclipse (April 8, 2024)

Jasper County School District (JCSD) will return from Spring Break on Monday, April 8, 2024. 

As we prepare for the 2024 total eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024, it is important to understand what will occur and how to remain safe.

JCSD will take this opportunity to educate our scholars regarding this astronomical event. The eclipse is projected to occur during dismissal for our elementary students. As a result, our staff members will educate our students regarding how to safely dismiss. 

On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk.

Safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse. Be sure you're familiar with when you need to wear specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing by reviewing these safety guidelines:

Eye Safety During a Total Solar Eclipse

Except during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright face, it is not safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection for solar viewing.

Viewing any part of the bright Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury.

When watching the partial phases of the solar eclipse directly with your eyes, which happens before and after totality, you must look through safe solar viewing glasses (“eclipse glasses”) or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. 

Always inspect your eclipse glasses or handheld viewer before use; if torn, scratched, or otherwise damaged, discard the device. Always supervise children using solar viewers.

Do NOT look at the Sun through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars, or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer — the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter and cause serious eye injury.)
