This month brings fresh talent and renewed purpose.
Here’s a glimpse into our latest work:
|
| Kenneth Grant, Senior Associate | |
Kenneth Grant joins us after more than 23 years at Pro Bono Project Silicon Valley, where he managed the Paternity/Child Support program beginning in 2001 and, from 2017 onward, also served as Supervising Attorney for the Reentry Program. In these roles, he oversaw and mentored volunteer attorneys and staff while providing high-quality legal representation to underserved communities in matters involving child support, parentage, custody and visitation, probate court guardianships, domestic violence, and other family law issues. His leadership and deep commitment to access to justice have left a lasting mark on our region.
Licensed to practice law in both California and New York, Kenneth brings to our firm a broad range of expertise built on an exceptional academic foundation. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University at Buffalo School of Law (with an International Law certificate), a Master of Studies in Slavonic Studies from the University of Oxford (Wadham College), and a Bachelor of Arts in Russian, German, and Fine Arts from the University of Denver, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He also completed advanced studies in Russian language and culture at Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State University and Leningrad (St. Petersburg) State Technological University. Kenneth is a member of the Santa Clara County Bar Association.
Outside of his legal practice, Kenneth has wide-ranging interests in classical music, art, reading, old films, and foreign languages. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, exploring California with his wife, and making art. He is fluent in Russian and proficient in German.

Jessie Yao brings a truly global perspective to her legal work, having earned her Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of California, Davis, and her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Shanxi University in China.
Her professional journey spans both sides of the Pacific—from working on civil litigation matters at the Wanbailing District Court in Taiyuan to contributing to legal tech innovation at CaseMail.AI in Monterey County. Jessie’s background blends sharp legal analysis with adaptability, whether drafting complex documents, navigating case strategy, or collaborating across cultures and time zones.
Her curiosity, work ethic, and cross-border experience align perfectly with our commitment to excellence in family law. Outside of her professional pursuits, Jessie enjoys cooking and attending live rock music events—hobbies that inspire her creativity and provide balance to her legal work.

| Victoria Thúy Vi McDowell, Intern | | |
Victoria McDowell is a recent graduate of San José State University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. A gifted vocalist, pianist, and violinist, she has shared her talents on local, national, and international stages—including performances for PBS in Naples, Italy, Paris by Night Productions, and for major sports teams like the San Jose Sharks, San Francisco Giants, and San Francisco 49ers.
Her accolades include winning the Northern California NAACP ACT-SO Gold Star in multiple years and categories, being crowned Miss Teen Vietnam USA 2019, and being honored by the City of San José as “The Voice of the Capital of Silicon Valley.” Beyond her artistic achievements, Victoria is also a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, a longtime dancer, and a dedicated community advocate, frequently performing at nonprofit events supporting children, the elderly, and underserved communities.
In addition to her artistic and community contributions, Victoria has gained valuable professional experience working with various branches of political offices and elected officials at the city, county, state, and federal levels, further deepening her commitment to public service and leadership.

In California, medical decision-making for children after divorce depends on custody arrangements: parents with joint legal custody must consult each other on major medical issues, while the parent with sole legal custody has full authority, and disputes—especially over long-term or special-needs care—may require court involvement to determine the child’s best interest.

Their unique perspectives remind us of the energy and innovation that come with fresh chapters.
We are looking forward to having Kenneth, Jessie, and Victoria on board and can’t wait to see the impact they’ll make with our clients, colleagues, and community. Be on the lookout this week for their individual introductions!

| | Law Clerks Farewell Luncheon | | |
To conclude our Summer Law Clerk Program, members of the Hoover Krepelka, LLP team came together for a celebratory lunch at Luna Mexican Kitchen to honor Alexis Mancera, Rachel White, Jackson Zou, and Daniel Thompson. Over the past few months, they’ve brought fresh perspectives, strong work ethic, and contributions to our firm. We are proud to have played a role in their professional journey.
Daniel shared that his favorite part of the program was going to court, analyzing the psychology behind every party present, and feeling the satisfaction that comes with wanting to win. Rachel shared that her favorite part was being entrusted with substantial work by supportive attorneys who were there to collaborate and work through complex counterparts together. Jackson, being the Jackson he is, shared his favorite part was… yes, the ratio of Diet Coke versus Coke Zero — 1:1. Alexis expressed that getting to join attorneys in court or client meetings was by far her favorite, as it allowed her to see how what is learned in school and work is applied to real people and cases.
As they return to law school, we wish them continued success and fulfillment. We’re confident they will carry forward the skills, insights, and values gained during their time with us—and we look forward to watching their legal careers thrive.

| | Open Doors to Future Possibilities | |
Open Doors to Future Possibilities (ODTFP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting veterans, first responders, and their families in the San Jose area. Founded in 2019, ODTFP provides a wide range of free services designed to help individuals navigate life’s challenges, confront past trauma, and achieve personal and professional goals. Their programs include individual and family counseling, employment assistance, workshops, and community events.
A centerpiece of ODTFP’s work is the Consultation Center for Healing and Transformation, which offers a strengths-based alternative to traditional therapy. Rather than focusing on diagnoses or medication, the center empowers clients to explore their skills, knowledge, and personal strengths, helping them turn challenges into opportunities for growth and transformation.
ODTFP promotes holistic well-being through programs supporting veterans’ physical, emotional, social, and spiritual health, offering education, resources, and community engagement opportunities, while relying on volunteers, donors, and partners to sustain and expand its impact.
Join Open Doors to Future Possibilities for the 3rd Annual Fundraiser: Operation Expansion on Friday, November 1, 2025, at Casino M8trix in San Jose for an exciting secret agent-themed evening of food, drinks, games, and live entertainment—support a great cause while enjoying a night to remember!
