Pumpkin-spice up your October with our latest news!
Welcome to the October edition of HK Today! This month, we celebrated an exciting promotion, honored cultural diversity, and supported breast cancer and domestic violence awareness initiatives while engaging meaningfully with our community. Here's what happened:
HK Pumpkin Patch Day 10/18
HK’s annual pumpkin patch outing was a bountiful harvest of fun! As tradition goes, our team had a fantastic time at Arata Farms in Half Moon Bay, where fall festivities truly come alive. From navigating the giant maze and braving the haunted mansion to enjoying hay rides and visiting the petting zoo, it was a day filled with laughter.
We officially celebrated Boss’s Day with a toast and nod of recognition for our HK leaders: James Hoover,
Travis I. Krepelka, Julia McDowell and Michelle Casillas.
The team also had fun singing Happy Birthday, enjoying cake, and giving a special shout-out to James Hoover—a man of many talents who continuously supports us as both a leader and mentor.
In a heartwarming moment, Associate Attorney, Wendy Chao shared she discovered her diplomas beautifully framed in her office by Jim. This is a testament to Jim’s character and his commitment to recognizing the achievements of HK’s attorneys. It reflects the thoughtful gestures that enhance our workplace.
It was a memorable day for the HK team, filled with fall spirit, appreciation, and camaraderie.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
At Hoover Krepelka, LLP, we deeply value our partnerships, and over time, many of these business connections become cherished friendships. One of our most valued partners, Karen D. Sparks, CDFA®, J.D. of Divorce Financial Strategists, is not only a brilliant professional but also a two-time breast cancer survivor.
In honor of Karen’s courageous journey and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we rallied our community to support her fundraising efforts for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event on 10/26/24. You can find Karen’s personal fundraising page, and more event details can be found here:
We believe in standing by each other, not only in business but in life's greatest challenges. Karen recently underwent surgery in September, and we wish her a speedy recovery as she continues to inspire so many.
Please join us in supporting Karen and the fight against breast cancer by donating, participating in the walk, or spreading the word. Your contributions and participation will help raise awareness and resources for this vital cause that touches the lives of so many women.
Thank you in advance for your support!

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it's important to recognize how domestic violence can impact divorce cases in California, especially in matters of child custody, spousal support, and property division. While the state follows a no-fault divorce system, evidence of abuse can significantly affect these decisions and may lead to protective restraining orders for victims.

A Gavron Warning, named after a 1988 California case, informs a spouse receiving alimony that they are expected to work toward becoming self-sufficient. California courts often issue this warning when ordering spousal support, emphasizing that support is not meant to be permanent unless the court deems otherwise for long-term marriages. This notice helps set expectations regarding financial independence and can affect the future continuation or modification of spousal support.
