New Report Looks at Emerging Trends in Social Media and Messaging App Use
According to the latest survey report from YouGov, more people are now getting their daily news insights from social platforms, with traditional news outlets losing traction as news delivery sources.
The DL: A recent YouGov survey indicates a significant shift in news consumption patterns, with traditional outlets losing ground to social platforms. Only 25% of US adults now rely on TV as their primary news source, down from 31% in 2019, while the use of social media has risen from 12% to 18%. Among Americans under 34, social media has surpassed TV as the primary news source. This trend raises concerns about the potential impact on news reliability, as less reputable sources may gain prominence without traditional journalistic vetting. The report also highlights trends in social platform and messaging app adoption, emphasizing the need for brands to have a well-defined social marketing strategy. The full YouGov report provides additional insights into evolving media trends and user behavior. Taking the platform trends into consideration should be top of mind when planning for new campaigns.

Hulu Set to Begin Password-Sharing Crackdown, Following Disney+
The Disney-owned streaming service changed its subscriber agreement to ban sharing of accounts outside of individual households.
The DL: Limiting password sharing on Hulu is good news for marketers as it ensures a more accurate and reliable user data profile, allowing marketers to target their advertising efforts more effectively. With restricted password sharing, marketers can more confidently analyze user behavior, preferences, and viewing habits. This move by Hulu also encourages subscribers to sign up for individual accounts, potentially expanding the user base and increasing the reach of marketing campaigns.

Super Bowl 2024: 55 Ads Revealed, No ChatGPT. Is This The End Of AI Mania?
More than 100 million viewers are expected to watch Super Bowl 58 on February 11 as the Kansas City Chiefs take on the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The DL: Super Bowl 58 is expected to attract over 100 million viewers, potentially surpassing the record set by last year's Super Bowl, which had over 115 million viewers. With Taylor Swift rumored to be attending to support her boyfriend, Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs, anticipation is high. Television commercials will once again be a major focus, with around 70 ads expected to air during the game. While AI-themed ads were prominent in previous years, this year's lineup seems to be moving away from that trend, with only a few brands incorporating AI-related themes. See the list of announced advertisers and get a sneak peek at some of the commercials that are sure to stir up some buzz.

Universal Music Will Pull Its Tracks From TikTok
The news comes after the pair failed to reach a new rights agreement and takes effect Feb. 1.
The DL: Universal Music Group removed its music from TikTok on February 1st, after unsuccessful negotiations on usage rights. This includes music from artists such as Taylor Swift, Adele, Drake, Billie Eilish, and many others. The decision stems from Universal's dissatisfaction with TikTok's compensation offers for its artists and concerns about generative AI usage. The existing rights agreement, initiated in 2021, concluded on January 31st, prompting the removal of all Universal-owned content from the platform. Universal accuses TikTok of attempting to "bully" them by leveraging its audience reach to secure a less favorable deal. In response, TikTok expresses disappointment, highlighting its role as a "free promotional and discovery vehicle" for artists. The development poses a significant challenge for TikTok, given its recent emphasis on music discovery. A TikTok commissioned report from last November revealed TikTok's pivotal role in music discovery, attracting record labels and influencing artists' career trajectories. While both parties may eventually return to negotiations, the impending absence of popular music on TikTok raises concerns about user confusion and frustration.
