March News

Dear HMS Families,

March is Women's History Month. Our History department will take time to celebrate the often-overlooked contributions of women in history, society, and culture. It is a time to learn about different women of the past who have fought hard for the changes that modern people enjoy today.

Spring is in the air and the month of March also brings the beginning of the 4th eight weeks. Our students are gearing up for testing, and the teachers are working hard to ensure they are ready for their spring assessments. We are excited about the progress we are making in the classrooms and are confident that we will achieve all of our goals during testing.

As a parent, it is important to talk with your child about staying focused on the test without stressing out. Your child prepares every day for these assessments and therefore should approach the test feeling ready and confident. Helpful tips include getting plenty of sleep and eating a well-balanced breakfast. Also, it is important for students not to be absent during testing.

Our winter sports teams finished out in February with very successful seasons. You will find the winter sports recap at the bottom of this newsletter. Don't forget, track season is in session and it’s very important for these student-athletes to stay focused in the classroom in order to remain eligible. We can't wait to see what our fantastic athletes have in store for us this spring! Also, we want to wish the best of luck to those students participating in Destination Imagination, the Regional Spelling Bee, the high school musical Anastasia, and the District Solo & Ensemble competition. I'd personally like to thank all the students and their coaches for the efforts and sacrifices they make daily for the extracurriculars at HMS. Also, a huge shout out to the parents, fans and friends of all programs for their continued support.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact a teacher or me directly. We are here to work together to provide the best possible education for your student! My e-mail address is [email protected] or you can reach me by phone at Harding Middle School, (740) 282-3481.

Sincerely,
Principal Bryan Mills

March is a good month to get started on improving your health. As it warms up a little, take a walk. Deep breathing and clearing your mind with activity are not only relaxing but beneficial for your health. Did you know stress makes you weigh more? Relaxed folks lose more weight and make their heart work less hard. March is also a great time to get a jump start on the needed vaccines for 7th graders. Don't wait until fall! It will cause you and me more stress! 🙂 Please make an appointment with your pediatrician or use the school-based clinic (Change, INC) to get the needed meningococcal and tetanus vaccines. Send in a copy of the paper they give you for proof or have them fax it to the school. HMS fax is 740-283-8949.

The dentist is coming to Harding again this year! The dates are May 18th and 19th. Paperwork will be going home next month and needs to be returned immediately. I know so many people struggle to get their children seen by dentists in our area. There are not enough dentists that take all insurances in our area. The mobile dentist takes all insurances and can do fillings, cleaning, and fluoride treatments. So, please return the paperwork to have your child included.

Please continue to turn in the physician referrals I have sent you concerning your child's vision and hearing screenings.

Thank you!
