March 2020
EDUCATE - MOTIVATE - INSPIRE

Message from our Principal

Dear Parents & Families,

Spring is in the air and the month of March brings the beginning of the 4th eight weeks. Our students are gearing up for testing, and our teachers are working hard to ensure they are ready for their spring assessments. We are excited about the progress we are making in the classrooms and are confident that we will achieve all of our goals during testing.

As a parent, it is important to talk with your child about staying focused on the test without stressing out. Your child prepares every day for these assessments and when the day comes it will be nothing different than they already are doing in the classroom. Helpful tips include getting plenty of sleep and eating a well-balanced breakfast. Just a reminder, HMS offers free breakfast in our cafeteria.

Our teachers and students have worked very hard this year, and we are proud of each of them for these efforts. Don't forget, track season is in session and it’s very important for these student athletes to stay focused in the classroom in order to remain eligible. We can't wait to see what our fantastic athletes have in store for us this spring! Also, we want to wish the best of luck to those students participating in Destination Imagination, the Regional Power of the Pen and the Regional Spelling Bee.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact a teacher or me directly. We are here to work together to provide the best possible education for your student! My e-mail address is bmills@rollred.org or you can reach me by phone at Harding Middle School, (740) 282-3481.

Sincerely,
Principal Bryan Mills

Message From Our Nurse
Flu season is here! Please teach your children to wash their hands well and often! Please keep your child home if he/she has a fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, and /or diarrhea because it is probably the flu. Being seen quickly for a diagnosis will make the anti-virals work better. Flu usually needs 5 days of recovery time at a minimum to keep from spreading it to others. The student must be 24 hours fever free without medication before they should return to school.

Family Medical Care School Based Health Center
CHANGE, INC.
CHANGE, INC. will be able to start providing care for those students who turn in their Family Medical Care packets. We have behavioral health & counseling available as well. The clinic also offers a fully functioning lab.

The School Based Heath Care, by no means, replaces your child's pediatrician or family provider. The providers will assure a summary of the visit will be sent to your family provider . Parents can schedule appointments for their child before, during, or immediately after school. Parents are also welcomed at the appointments if they would like to be there.

The school Based Health Care hours will be Monday - Friday 7:30AM - 3:30PM at Harding

Good Luck
HMS Track Team & Coaches this season!

Winter Sports Recaps
Girls Basketball

The 8th grade girls basketball team finished the 2019-2020 season with a record of 5-12. The team played a challenging schedule, playing BMC champs Oak Glen, undefeated Tridelphia , and this year's Bellaire Tournament Champs Bellaire. The team recorded quality wins over Bellaire , Martins Ferry, and New Martinsville. The coaches want to wish the girls good luck as they’ll move on to Big Red next year and to continue to work hard.
The Harding Middle School 7th grade Lady Stallions finished the season with a 10-9 record. One of their team goals was to finish the season above .500 and they accomplished their goal. The Lady Stallions had a great regular season with much improvement from all of the girls throughout the year. They began the season with a loss at Oak Glen but prevailed by going on a 4 game winning streak (even defeating an 8th grade Wheeling Middle in the Wheeling Classic on December 20th). The Stallions went on to defeat a St. Clairsville team contrived of both 7th and 8th graders, Carrollton, and Beaver Local. The Lady Stallions used their athleticism and ability to apply a full-court press which secured a lot of their close scoring games. One of the highest points of the season was when the 7th grade team defeated an undefeated Martins Ferry at home in a thriller by a score of 32-25. The Lady Stallions ended the regular season with a big win at East Liverpool. The girls won the quarter-final game of the Bellaire Tournament with a score of 34-31 against Union Local. They advanced and went on to lose a heart breaker against Martins Ferry in the semi-finals of the Bellaire Tournament which was decided by a game winning shot. We are proud of their efforts and cannot wait to improve in the off-season!

Boys Basketball

The 8th grade boys basketball team finished their season with a 14-3 record. They began their season with a tough loss at East Liverpool. After that, they won 13 games in a row. Members of the team include Aydan Manning, Bubby Reese, Josh Schoonover, Mathias Loot, Jace Kernahan, Demetrius Leas, Da’Shjuan Smith and Elijah Mullins. All of the boys improved a ton and we look forward to seeing what they can do in the years to come at SHS.
The Harding 7th grade basketball team had a very successful season this year. They ended the year with a record of 18 wins and 2 losses. The Stallions defeated St. Clairsville by a score of 52-37 to win the 2020 St. Clairsville Al Glitch tournament. The coaches want to thank everyone who supported both boy’s teams throughout this season. The coaches believe that this group has a bright future and really showed that playing as a team is the main goal. We are looking forward to another successful season next year as 8th graders.

Stallion Wrestling

The 2019-2020 Harding Stallion Wrestling team finished the season with many great accomplishments to be proud of. This year’s team finished the season with an undefeated dual record of 10 wins and 0 losses. The team was also Ohio Valley Champions of the 2-day OVC Tournament. Harding finished the OVC Tournament with 8 individual placers. Aidan Hendricks-5th place (86 lbs.), Brody Saccoccia-Champion of the 92 lb. weight class, Ciara Goff-5th place (110 lbs.), Savior Faulks-Champion (134 lbs.), Sabron Felton-5th place (142 lbs.), Camden Vein-Champion (150 lbs.), Isaac Hill-2nd place (160 lbs.) and Javin Harper-Champion of the Heavyweight class.
The Stallion Wrestling team also had 6 wrestlers place in the Districts and they also became State Qualifiers. These members of the 2019-2020 team are Aidan Hendricks-7th place (84 lbs.), Brody Saccoccia-Champion (90 lbs.), Kail Simmons-3rd place (132 lbs.), Savior Faulks-2nd place (138 lbs.), Camden Vein-5th place (154 lbs.) and Javin Harper-2nd place (Heavyweight). The coaches want to congratulate all of the members of the 2019-2020 Stallion Wrestling team on a great season and want to let them know to continue to work hard in the off-season.
