HMS NEWS IN THE MIDDLE
SEPTEMBER 2019
EDUCATE - MOTIVATE - INSPIRE

Message from our Principal

Two weeks in and I can’t thank the parents, teachers and students enough on how they attacked the year. This group of students are setting goals, working hard and I already know the end results will be impressive. The 5th graders now know their way around the middle school and have overcome the anxiety of opening a locker. Our 6th graders are looking confident and have already established a healthy routine for success. The 7th & 8th graders look ready to lead the Stallions with pride!!! This is the largest student body since the building was erected in 2002. The potential and talent is there to shine both in and out of the classroom.
Go Stallions Go!!!

If you would like to contact me, my e-mail address is bmills@rollred.org. You can also reach me by phone at Harding Middle School, (740) 282-3481.

Sincerely,
Principal Bryan Mills

Message from the Nurse
****WE STILL HAVE STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT TURNED IN UPDATED SHOT RECORDS!! THESE ARE DUE SEPT. 12th!!

Attention parents of current 7th Graders,

The State of Ohio requires all 7th grade students to have a T-dap vaccination and Meningitis vaccine to attend school. The Meningococcal and T-dap vaccines are required for entry into the 7th grade. This is an Ohio Department of Health mandate. Proof of the vaccines or an exemption must be on file or they will not be allowed to return to school until it's done. Please be aware attendance and truancy procedures will still take place if your student is missing school.

If you have any questions regarding this notice please contact the school nurse at Harding Middle School.
Thank you
Amy Neely, RN, BSN, CSN

The Health Department is open Monday-Thursday 8am-4pm
& Friday 8am-3pm
ATTENTION: Pick up and Drop off

Please continue to be patient and use caution when transporting your child on school grounds to and from school. Calvin Jones Way will be reduced to one way during these times.

In the AM , we want to use the entire sidewalk to drop off students. Please pull around the building passed the café doors to the end of the yellow curb before stopping to drop off. All trailing vehicles will continue to pull forward until the traffic stops. At this moment all students are to get out of their vehicles and step onto the building sidewalk. Have your child or children ready to step out as this will help us reduce our drop off line from backing up onto Sunset Blvd. If extensive time is needed for unloading, please pull into a parking spot to accomplish this. Your understanding with is much appreciated.

In the PM , we hope everyone understands that 745 students are exiting the building in a matter of 10 minutes. Buses will pull out at 2:35pm. Walkers / pick-ups will be released at 2:37. At this time our emphasis will be on the safety of students. We will attempt to get as many students up the crosswalk as we can before any vehicles move. Please be patient and pull into a parking spot and wait for your child to walk to you. Remember to allow the multiple staff members crossing students and directing traffic to lead the dismissal. Parking along the front sidewalk is prohibited in the PM because it blocks our view of students crossing the road to find their rides. Again, it helps considerably if you park your vehicle into a spot during dismissal. Additional spots are typically available towards the stadium side. No student may be picked up at the front door or along the front sidewalk prior to 2:42. Please arrive after this time if you would like to pick them up along the front sidewalk. Use extra caution and provide yourself with additional time when traveling in the various possible weather conditions.

Thank you for everything you do to keep our kids safe.
HMS Attendance Reminders
At Harding middle school we strive for student success and excellence. This is only possible when students are present in the building and on time to school. Below are some general reminders about our attendance policies and what you can expect as you begin your journey here as a Harding Stallion. Further details regarding our attendance policies can be found in the student handbook your child will be receiving at the start of the school year. We are looking forward to a new and successful school year!

  • The morning tardy bell rings at 8:00 am. Students must be in their homeroom before this bell rings or they will be marked tardy for the day.

  • If your student must miss school or be tardy due to an appointment that cannot be scheduled at any other time, an excuse must be brought in upon return.

  • If your student misses.....

5 days - a letter will be sent home outlining school policies

7 days - a family support meeting will be scheduled

10 days - your student will be referred to court for mediation

  • If your student is tardy.....

6 days - lunch detention will be assigned and a letter will be sent home

12 days - after school detention assigned for each subsequent day tardy
On-line Report Cards
For this 2019-2020 school year, parents of Steubenville City Schools students will have to go online (Progress Book) to find their child's quarterly and semester grades.

SCS will be sending out a call notification to parents and guardians to remind them to check Progress Book at the end of each grading period.

Parents without access to the internet are free to go to the office to request the hard copy and one will be printed on the spot. We appreciate your support and cooperation.
