Hello Amazing HNB Supporters,
This past month has been bananas.
Indeed, it has been bananas starting a new program - Food Assistance for Refugees (FAR) - while also continuing several amazing Newcomers to Neighbors events, and stepping up home set-ups once again (more on that below). So busy, I failed to get out a proper newsletter in November!
But also, the HNB warehouse for a brief few days was overtaken by literal bananas. Hundreds of pounds of them. We distributed the majority of them to our FAR families and many other refugees in our network. And banana management became a symbol of how we can best plan for food each week for the FAR recipients in partnership with So What Else and others looking to donate food. It's a learning process indeed!
Additionally, this past month, our artisans have seen record sales, selling $2,500 worth of goods at six markets. And Atheer - our carpenter in residence - alone sold 16 handcrafted cutting boards, beautiful surfaces for charcuterie or just cutting veggies and fruits like, errr, bananas.
For Newcomers to Neighbors dinner outing (pictured above), we, thankfully, served no bananas. But our amazing refugee chefs prepared menu options that spanned from hamburgers to Middle Eastern chicken and rice. And it was so lovely to see the volunteers and newcomers bonding and eating together while watching the kids perform spontaneous singing and dancing.
A great end to a rather bananas year.
