Hello Laura,
This Sunday we had our Newcomers to Neighbors kick-off potlucks for our first two cohorts. It was a wonderful day hanging out with our volunteers from all over, and newly arrived families from Afghanistan, Venezuela, Nicaragua and El Salvador, all in the beautiful setting on the grounds of a Turkish Mosque. And events like these are good reminders of our shared humanity and that no matter what part of the world you come from, we all want what's best for our families, and we can all find common ground breaking bread together. I am also reminded that all kids from everywhere love balloon creations :)!
Besides the launch of Newcomers to Neighbors, we have been very busy this past month. Not just with set ups but also with casework and rental assistance (both of which we are scaling back in May). So my apologies for not getting an update out in April.
And with the ever-changing state of things, we continue to tweak and reassess operations around here every week — whether it's our NEA grant for storytelling getting canceled or newly arrived SIVs literally knocking on our door asking for help finding housing. Never a dull moment....
Thankfully, we have amazing supporters like you who have come through in a big way, giving both your time, talent and treasure. So thank you all a million times over for helping us get through these crazy times.
