Tips for honors housing and housing contract renewal

As you consider renewing your honors housing contract, we'd like to pass along a few helpful tips. For AY 2017-18 returning Honors College students have three great locations to continue your honors residential experience.

  • Duhme Hall (upper-division students, women only)
  • Third Street Suites (floors 2, 3 and 4 only, upper-division students)
  • Honors College and Residences (designated upper-division rooms, floors 5 and 6 HCRN, floor 6 HCRS)
The housing contract portal remains open until 11:59 p.m. on February 28, 2017 for renewal requests. Keep checking for available spaces in the honors residential communities until then. The system is dynamic and changes frequently (e.g., someone who had previously booked a space changed her/his mind and cancelled the booking).

After February 28, 2017, we will make a wait list available for space in Honors College and Residences. To be eligible for the Honors College and Residences wait list, you must:

  • Have completed and signed a housing contract for AY 2017-18
  • Be in good standing with the Honors College
Please remember honors housing is a sub-set of University Residences and thus follows all University Residences' rules and procedures.
Got talent? Come share it at the 'Battle of the Houses'

The Honors College wants to encourage you to represent your house with a talent in this lively competition.  Do you sing, dance, juggle, do comedy, have a gift for theater?  We welcome talents of all kinds. Come compete for the top prize.

We are also looking for students to cheer on their fellow classmates.

Join us Thursday, Nov. 17 for the show and fun. It all gets started at 7:00 p.m. in the Innovation Forum.

Did you know the Honors College is built on four pillars?
  • Interdisciplinary academics
  • Undergraduate research
  • Leadership development
  • Community and global experiences
Each week, we will include a profile of a student who exemplifies one of our pillars, or primary tenets.  We are now taking a look at Community and global experiences.

The Purdue Honors College aims to get students ready for a global world, by exposing you to new ideas, cultures and experiences.  The HC also fosters engagement in our community of scholars. Each week you will find a number of enrichment activities designed to help you bond with other students and take advantage of peer-to-peer learning.

Community Engagement: Briana Jenkins
A flair for fashion, eager for engagement

It doesn't take long to notice, Briana Jenkins has style.   As a business student, she's expected to dress professionally, but you would never call her outfits bland.

"I try to edge it up with different jewelry," she says.  "Statement pieces, necklaces and earrings."

Style isn't a passing interest for Jenkins, she plans to start her own fashion business and is working toward it by getting heavily involved in her scholarly community and forming strong connections with honors faculty and staff.

Last year, as a member of the Emerging Leaders in Honors group, Jenkins consistently attended the weekly Duhme Community Dinner with Faculty Fellows and was at every Emerging Leaders in Honors activity.

At the same time, the business management major and aspiring entrepreneur was also juggling the responsibilities of her spring HONR course, Innovation Forum. The class put students in charge of conceptualizing, designing and overseeing the installation of a space to showcase innovative ideas.

"During the weeks leading up to the building dedication, Briana continued to contribute her time and energy to the new physical Innovation Forum," said Catharine Patrone, senior director of academic and student affairs for the Honors College.

"We got to see it come alive," Jenkins said.  "We went to the different construction sites and phases of the project and saw them come together. It's nice to say we were part of this. We were the first SparkLab; we started this."

Community engagement keeps Jenkins well-informed of upcoming leadership programs, internships and other opportunities. This summer, she'll explore management roles with an internship at Ross Stores Inc., a chain of discount department stores.

Her advice for getting involved?

Have a planner, go to events as a study break and get to know your RHP, she says. They are well-versed in upcoming opportunities and can be your wing-man or wing-woman, so you feel more comfortable in new situations.

Panel discussion on conventional and organic agriculture

This talk will cover the advantages and disadvantages of conventional and organic agriculture, including why you should care.

  • Free pizza and drinks will be provided.
  • You'll be helping an HC student complete her scholarly project and participating in research.
  • Listen as the experts explore the issues and think critically about the topics yourself.
The discussion is part of a project involving two voluntary surveys (taken before and after the panel). The surveys will measure changes in the views of audience members about controversial topics in agriculture.
