March 2020 Newsletter

  Greetings!

It has been a very busy month at HNNH and in the medical world at large. I had no intention of sending out a newsletter now, but events have motivated me to reach out to address the virus that is on everyone's minds .

Covid-19
Many patients have contacted us over the last weeks regarding the corona virus. Is it something to worry about? Do we have a protocol for prevention and treatment? What steps should they take to protect themselves?

Viruses are unfortunately a fact of life. Practically every winter there is some media frenzy about how bad the flu season is going to be, and every once in a while a new variety of virus comes around that gives us real cause for concern and becomes a real pandemic . The last real one was 2009 with the swine flu , also known as H1N1, and previous to that it was back in 1968.

Patients know that I tend to be cautious about these things as it's too easy to get alarmed constantly about every new virus. We treat the flu every year and rarely have any reason to treat new variations any differently than the usual seasonal variety. The current corona virus spread seems to be concerning enough that I have decided it is prudent to have a more robust plan to give to those who want it to be prepared.

If you are a current HNNH patient and want to know what I am recommending, please call, or  email us and we can check your current protocol and let you know what we would recommend to enhance it for the current situation.

Inside HNNH Clinical Updates

We are instituting a new newsletter - Inside HNNH .

For several years our cancer patients have had our Inside IOS communication as an informal emailing that happens whenever something comes out in the research that I think is clinically important for cancer patients to know, an that shouldn't wait until their next exam. It has allowed us to communicate and respond much more effectively as new information becomes available.

I have been contemplating a general medicine communication for the rest of the HNNH community for a while. New information and guidelines come out frequently, and often old ones aren't being followed that are important to know. For example-
  • Aspirin For Primary Prevention - many patients are taking an aspirin a day, not knowing that the guidelines have changed.
  • Antibiotics for Dental Prophylaxis - many dentists are still insisting patients take antibiotics prior to procedures. The guidelines were changed recommending against that over a decade ago and again updated last year.

The corona virus this year has tipped me over into deciding that it is a necessary component for good comprehensive care in today's rapidly evolving world of information.

You can sign up for Inside HNNH here .
