Thanksgiving 2018 Newsletter
|
|
Greetings!
Although outside feels like it’s end of year break up here in the suddenly frigid Northeast, it is in fact, Thanksgiving time.
It’s been an incredibly exciting and busy year at HNNH as we’ve expanded our team and what we can offer to our community. New doctors; new awards; and a wonderful new cause to support.
We are incredibly grateful for what we get to do, and
the opportunity to share in each other's lives as we all continue on this journey of health and healing.
|
|
These last few months have brought two new acknowledgements to us, for which we are incredibly grateful.
We were also awarded
Best for Holistic Cancer Care
by Global Health & Pharma.
We are honored to have received the recognition, and we know that caring for cancer patients is an endless journey of continually striving for improvement.
As patient initiated recognition, they mean even more to us. Thank you for believing in and recognizing what we do. You keep nominating us, and we will strive to continue to deserve it.

Residency - Post Graduate Medical Training at HNNH
After I graduated medical school I completed a one-year residency in Family Practice. The extra training is not required, but extremely helpful as medical school doesn’t ever fully prepare a doctor for the reality of practice. Having extra post-graduate, and having post-graduate continued training and mentorship helped me become a much better practitioner.
In that spirit, HNNH has become an affiliate of National University of Naturopathic Medicine as a postgraduate residency training site. We are fortunate to have two wonderful doctors who have joined us for a 2-year residency to learn our unique method of practice.

|
Dr. Dragg
is our senior resident and has been with us since last year.
|
|
Dr. Smith
joined us this summer and is our new first year resident.

HNNH is proud to be recognized as a key supporter of
Peace Possible
. We recently donated hundreds of containers of electrolytes to be distributed in areas of severe nutritional deficiencies.
A not for profit founded by my colleague and friend, Dr Decker Weiss, the organization works in conflict zones throughout the world to bring medical care to those in need, and conducts research on the neurochemistry and natural treatment of severe trauma.
For more information about the organization and the wonderful work they do all over the world, you can see

Supplements in the News
There have been a lot of recent reports in the news about supplements, unfortunately most of it negative. Some of that is well deserved, as studies are continuously showing that most supplements tested are adulterated and do not contain what the label claims. A recent
study from the Mayo Clinic
found hormones in 100% of OTC adrenal support supplements, the most common being budesonide, a synthetic steroid hormone found in 25% of samples tested! It’s why we are so incredibly careful with our sourcing.
However, a lot of the news about supplements is just plain wrong. A great example is the current media frenzy over the failure of vitamin D and fish oils in a recent large scale study known as the
VITAL study
, to reduce cancer or heart disease. It would be incredibly disappointing, IF it were actually what the study showed.
Important fact - the 'high dose' vitamin D supplementation was 2,000IU, not a dose many with any knowledge of vitamin D dosing would consider high. I'm regularly dosing 5-10,000IU in order to get patient blood levels to optimum.
Even with the low dosing, there was an important difference found. Looking after a 2-year period, the vitamin D group had a 25-37%% lower death rate! If this was a drug study, the headlines would be touting the reduction is cancer deaths with this amazing drug.
So don’t throw out your vitamin D or fish oil supplements just yet - they aren’t miracle cures for everything, but are an important tool against the most common killers.
