And when Jesus cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, 'unto your hands I commit my spirit.'" Having said this, He breathed His last. (Luke 23:46)
Friday was the day that governor Pontius Pilate sentenced Jesus to be crucified on the cross. Barabbas who was guilty was set free, according to a holiday custom. Jesus was tried, suffered on the cross, died, and was buried on Friday. Because of what Jesus endured on Friday, you might be wondering why the day is called "Good Friday."
Christians consider the good news came when God raised Jesus from the dead three days later.
Many Christian churches have worship services on Good Friday with the liturgy consisting of the "Seven Last Expressions from the Cross."
Jesus carried His own cross to a spot outside of Jerusalem to Golgotha where He was on the cross for six hours. He died at 3 p.m. and the earth turned dark at that time of day.
Interestingly, none of Jesus' disciples witnessed His death on the cross. His beloved disciple John was there, but Jesus sent him home to take care of His mother. Therefore, neither one of them witnessed His actual death.
Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimethea. God raised Him from the dead, and He still lives!
