HOMERuN 2025: A Year of Growth, Achievement, and Collaboration

The Hospital Medicine Reengineering Network (HOMERuN) is a rapidly growing collaborative made up of more than 50 Hospital Medicine groups from academic and non-academic hospitals across the United States.

2025 has been an incredible year for HOMERuN. With groundbreaking studies, new initiatives, impactful publications, and thriving work groups, we are thrilled to share the highlights of our collective efforts.

🏆 Research Highlights: Major Grants & Studies

HOMERuN currently supports three active grants and has submitted several large planning grants.

Achieving Diagnostic Excellence through Prevention and Teamwork (ADEPT) Study (AHRQ R18 Grant)

  • Piloted and launched Diagnostic Cross-check Intervention across 13 sites. Completed 3148 adjudications completed across 14 sites.
  • 9 Posters at SHM Converge 2025; 3 Posters/presentations at DEX 2025; 4 abstracts submitted to SHM Converge 2026.
  • 1 manuscript published in Diagnosis (Berl).

Identification and Prevention of Potentially Inappropriate Inter-Hospital Transfers (POINT) Study (AHRQ R01 Grant)

  • Completed adjudications across 16 sites, totaling 1560 patient transfers.
  • 1 Poster at SHM Converge 2025; 2 abstracts submitted for 2026 SHM and SGIM national conferences.
  • 4 manuscripts published/under review from Aim 1.

Missed Home Health Visits Study (NIA R01 Grant) now getting underway.

Planning at least 5 grant submissions to NHLBI, PCORI, and NCICD.

✨ Advancing Patient-Centered Care: The HOMERuN PFAC

The HOMERuN Patient & Family Advisory Council, which includes patients, family members, and caregivers, is an essential part of HOMERuN.


  • Grant Partnerships: Named research partners on three PCORI grant submissions (I-SLEEP Study, COMFORT Study, and SMART vCAP Trial).
  • Active Involvement: Provided study design advice for four projects.
  • Leadership: Two PFAC members joined the Executive Committee to centralize patient voices in decision-making.
  • Publication: Co-authored a publication on outcome ranking for non-severe Community-acquired Pneumonia.

Patient Communication

Hosted a collaborative session on practices with PFAC input.

Plan manuscript submission for early 2026 and begin new projects to improve communication practices.

HEARS (Health Equity, Advocacy, and Research for Society)

Published a mixed-method study on hospitalist perceptions of health equity.

Launch a Health Equity Lecture Series and integrate equity concepts across HOMERuN.

Hospital Medicine and SUD

Developed a perspectives piece using the stages of change model.

Establish a co-chair position and plan meetups at national conferences.

K Curious Peer Mentoring

Held quarterly meetings with 15 members from 11 institutions.

Host a webinar in early 2026 to expand membership and collaboration.

Medical Education

Published in JHM on onboarding best practices.

Conduct a rapid qualitative analysis of rounding styles (manuscript expected early 2026).

📢 Hospital Medicine Opportunities

The Vanderbilt Interdisciplinary Hospital-based Systems of Care T32 Research Training progrAm (VISTA): The NIH/NHLBI-supported program is recruiting for the Academic Year 2027 cohort (starting July 2026). It trains 2-3 new postdoctoral investigators annually in health systems research for acute heart, lung, blood, or sleep disorders in the hospital setting.
