Sin, The Real "S" Word
We are going to step out of our typical routine of doing a series, and do a number of independent sermons in November. I'll start things off this Sunday talking about Sin. Have you ever noticed how little anyone talks about sin? It's funny to me because as our culture becomes more vulgar and the propensity to use 4-letter words abounds, you mention "sin" and people become defensive. It's the first symptom of hiding, if you doubt this look at Genesis 3. The thing is talking about "sin" always feels personal because according to scripture none of us are off the hook with this. The funny thing is there can be more self-condemnation than conviction when it comes to our sin, and this is not helpful. I was tempted to not even do a hook this week, as my accountability partners told me that this title would be an attendance killer. I rolled the dice and erred on the side of transparency and authenticity. The thing is most people have put sin on an amortization schedule, we tend to spread it out over time so it never feels like such an affront to God. If this was true; then this means God has some sort of unknown quantity of sin that he is measuring before he cuts us off, but this is not Biblical. The fact is the slightest amount of sin is an offense to God. I also should share that admission is not always confession. Listen, we all want the benefits of grace, but it cannot happen without confronting our sin. Join us Sunday as we experience more teaching than preaching when it comes to this issue.
