While the Library is Closed

Our library staff, Margaret, Russell and Nikki, have asked us to tell you that they miss everyone like crazy and can’t wait to reopen our branch library.

Our library, like all other offices and stores, is closed as a precaution to help limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). During this period all due dates are extended and you do not need to return materials until Oakland Public Library is back in full operation. The Friends of PAL newsletter will alert you when we know the date the library will reopen for business.

Yes, our library is closed, but there are more continuing library services than you can imagine. If you have internet you can access electronic books, audio books, periodicals, music and movies from home .   It’s easy!  Need a library card? While the library is closed, you can complete an online application https://www.oaklandlibrary.org/using-library/library-cards to set up your account.

Go to https://www.oaklandlibrary.org/online-resources/e-books-and-digital-content  and see all that is available; follow their instructions to download Google Play or the App Store, sign in with your library card number and pin.

You can watch movies and TV online with KANOPY, more movies and audio books with HOOPLA, even learn a new language with PRONUNCIATOR.

Here are two very helpful services online from OPL:

Sheltering in place (while perhaps working from home with kids out of school/daycare) can lead to a lot of screen time. When you're ready to cut down on the screens for a bit, visit this site for recommended activities.  https://oaklandlibrary.org/blogs/childrens-services/screen-free-activities-family-fun

Tutor.com -- Free, Live and One-On-One Homework Help for Students and Parents

Oakland Public Library is happy to provide access to Tutor.com, a trusted resource for students and adult learners that offers live and FREE one-on-one tutoring, homework help and test preparation for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade in a variety of subjects.

Live Spanish-speaking support is also available for math, science, and social studies subjects. Live one-on-one assistance is available everyday from 12pm (noon) until 12am (midnight).  https://oaklandlibrary.org/blogs/childrens-services/tutorcom
Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau is required to count every person living in the United States, regardless of citizenship status. That count is the basis for how federal funding is allocated to the different communities across the country. The count is made between March and July of 2020. It is what ensures that our community receives its share of federal funding that supports education, libraries, housing, health, transportation, and other critical programs that make Oakland thrive.  https://oaklandlibrary.org/oaklandcounts-2020-census
Please be sure to answer the census questionnaire you got in the mail, if you have not already done so.

What's Happening at the Library
Effective March 16, the Oakland Public Library closed all Library locations to help limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). These closures will remain in effect until further notice. All programs are canceled while our library is closed. The Friends of PAL will send out a notice when we know the date the library will reopen.
