February Update: Building Community, Connection, and Hope

February is already shaping up to be a meaningful and busy month for our community, and I’m grateful to share a few exciting updates with you. On February 15th, registration opens for our annual Hustle for Hope fundraiser, one of the many activities taking place throughout April for HIE Awareness Month. This year, we have 18 in-person events confirmed, as well as the option to participate virtually. You can walk, run, or roll, indoors or outdoors, all at your own pace and in a way that works for you. We hope you’ll join us and help spread awareness this spring!

We are also thrilled to share that registration is officially open for the first-ever Hope for HIE Family & Community Conference, taking place April 24–26, 2026, at the Hyatt Regency Boston in Boston, MA, with options to attend in person or online. Our team and community volunteers are hard at work building a robust, meaningful, and exciting program that blends support, science, and celebration of community for HIE families—across all impacts and outcomes, ages, and stages—as well as researchers, clinicians, and advocates dedicated to advancing the unmet needs of the global HIE community.

Next week I’ll be traveling to Naples, Italy, to speak at the International Newborn Brain Conference, representing Hope for HIE on the global stage. It’s an honor to share the voices and experiences of our community with researchers and clinicians from around the world, and to continue strengthening the bridge between science, care, and lived experience.

Thank you, as always, for being part of this community and for the many ways you show up for one another. Together, we are building connection, advancing understanding, and creating hope, today and for the future.

With gratitude,

Betsy

Research Update: What Do Outcomes Look Like at School Age After Neonatal Seizures?

Families impacted by hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and other newborn brain injuries often live with long timelines of uncertainty. One of the most common questions we hear is: What will life look like when my child is older?

A newly published multicenter study from the Neonatal Seizure Registry offers important, long-term insight by examining neurodevelopmental outcomes at ages 5–6 for children who experienced acute provoked neonatal seizures, including those related to HIE.

HIE Awareness Month 2026 Theme Announced

We're so excited to share the theme for this year's HIE Awareness Month: HOLD ONTO HOPE.

This April, together with the Newborn Brain Society, we are launching Polar Bear Care through a global Hold-A-Thon campaign to improve family-centered care for babies and families affected by HIE. The Hold-A-Thon will support NICU teams in reviewing and strengthening multidisciplinary approaches to family presence, holding, and supportive touch during therapeutic hypothermia.

We are in the process of onboarding NICUs across the world to take part in this exciting initiative!

Hope in Action: William the Champion

We’re proud to share one of our amazing Hope for HIE kids, William, has been named as a 2026 Champion for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children!

William's mom, Brigid, has been serving on the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children's NICU Advisory Board for several years, ensuring HIE and other full-term family perspectives are included and supported. She also volunteers with Hope for HIE and has shared her advocacy journey in a recent Peer Perspective Series video on our YouTube Channel.

Take Three: Awareness, Education, Support

Hustle for Hope registration opens on February 15th! We are so excited to share that we have 18 confirmed in-person Hustle events scheduled for this spring to kick-off HIE Awareness Month in April! Eighteen is our organization's record and this fundraiser wouldn't be possible without our incredible Hustle Hosts who volunteer their time and efforts each year.

Early bird pricing ($30) runs from February 15th - March 15th. Pricing bumps up to $35 on March 16th, so be sure to register early. We can't wait to hustle with you this spring!

Hope for HIE welcomes the updated 2026 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Committee on Fetus and Newborn Clinical Report, Therapeutic Hypothermia for Neonatal Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy. The report provides clear, evidence-based guidance on therapeutic hypothermia (TH) for infants with moderate-to-severe HIE, reinforces critical safety and implementation standards, and importantly highlights family consultation in borderline and late-presenting cases.

We applaud this continued commitment to high-quality, standardized care and the recognition that parents are essential partners in decision-making.

Pregnancy after HIE can bring hope, fear, grief, and joy—sometimes coexisting all at once.

In our latest Peer Perspective Series, HIE parents Sarah and Suzi share their lived experiences navigating pregnancy after HIE, reminding us that there is no “right” timeline, advocacy looks different for everyone, and grace is essential along the way.

If you’re considering this path—or already walking it—this conversation is a reminder that every journey is unique and every feeling is valid.
