Mid-Summer Brings Hope and Innovation!

Preventing HIE and Identifying HIE Earlier

Last week, I had the great honor to speak at the ARPA-H Making Obstetrics Care Smart (MOCS) public kick-off meeting in Washington, DC, driving and representing the patient-family stakeholder experience into early identification and prevention of fetal hypoxia.

This program is investing over $90m into redeveloping better, effective, accurate testing both in utero and in labor and delivery to fill critical gaps in care, giving patients and their medical care teams more information to make the best and safest decisions for better outcomes.

This is the ultimate BHAG -- Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal!

Summer Systems

Our team has been working away behind the scenes implementing our new systems that are already making us a stronger organization. Our CRM system is up and running, which includes a cohesive database management system, communications, and fundraising. This allows our team to more dynamically support our community, and sets the stage for our Community Engagement Platform that we are about to begin building, which will eventually connect with our expanding (read more about that below!) HIE Research Registry!

While it's not the most exciting to talk about, we hope it will bring a more cohesive experience for all who engage in our support programs and services, as well as our research partners and collaborators.

These systems (and the people building them) aren't possible to invest in without the continued support of our donors and partners.

With hope,

Betsy

2026 Hustle for Hope Awards and Fundraising HIElights

Every year, the Hope for HIE community comes together to raise awareness and critical funds for our programs and services supporting families impacted by Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE). Hustle for Hope 2026 was no different. Whether you gathered a team of family and friends, ran on your own, or joined us at a local in-person event, you helped bring hope to families facing HIE around the world.

This year, we welcomed over 1,000 registrants, hosted 15 local events, and raised over $90,000 to fuel our mission forward as we accelerate awareness, advocacy, education, research, and support.

Phillip Dodge Award Winner:

Dr. Danielle Guez Barber

The Child Neurology Society announced its 2026 award winners, with Dr. Danielle Guez Barber being named the Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award winner. This is one of the highest honors a young physician-scientist in child neurology can receive, and there is no one more deserving who has dedicated their life to Hope for HIE. In addition to being a HIE parent, Dr. Barber is also a Child Neurologist, Physician-Scientist, HIE Registry PI, and a member of the Hope for HIE Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Board.

Research Update:

HIE Registry Extension Funded

The HIE Registry — a combined effort between Hope for HIE, the Cerebral Palsy Research Network (CPRN), and the Newborn Brain Society (NBS) — has been awarded a three-year grant from the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation (PERF) to expand what it can do. For our community, that means better data, better research, and better answers.

Hope Makers:

The Lee Family

Recently, the Lee family attended a World Cup game in Canada, their home country. Ahead of the game, they made a sign, wrote on their shirts, and raised awareness for HIE. This is exactly what Hope Makers do. They think outside the box about how their voice echoes beyond our Hope for HIE community.

"We feel it is vital to highlight Hope for HIE because of how reliably they connect families with genuine expertise. The organization bridges the gap between daily parental care and the broader medical community, offering access to the most up-to-date research and expert insights."

Research Update:

June 2026 Round Up

At Hope for HIE, we follow the latest research so our community can see how science is moving the needle for babies and families affected by HIE. This round-up brings together six recent studies and expert articles that, taken together, capture where the field is heading: toward care that treats the whole baby, brings families closer, looks ahead to predicting and preventing complications, and works for every family — wherever they are.

Meet Ben Holland,

HIE Hospital Ambassador

HIE Hospital Ambassadors act as the "bridge" between their local hospital and health systems and Hope for HIE's longitudinal support, offering education, connection, and a hand to hold from initial diagnosis through the hospital care that follows. We're excited to introduce Ben Holland, our newest HIE Hospital Ambassador for C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ben is the father of two boys, both diagnosed with HIE at birth.

Take Three: Awareness, Education, Support

July is Disability Pride Month, a time to celebrate disability identity, amplify voices from the disability community, and push forward with advocacy and inclusion. This observance, rooted in advocacy and empowerment, highlights the achievements and struggles of the disability community worldwide. Read our blog post highlighting how Disability Pride Month originated and how Hope for HIE embodies its core values through advocacy.

An HIE diagnosis doesn't just change your child's story, it reshapes the relationships around you. Some fall away, some transform, and new ones form in places you never anticipated.

In this Peer Perspective Series panel, two HIE moms, Shayna B. and Kati L., opened up about how relationships with partners, family, medical teams, and community shifted, strained, and grew across their HIE journeys.

In this month's Child Life Q&A, Annie Gunning, Certified Child Life Specialist and Grief Counselor, shared how play supports emotional wellbeing, what coping through play actually looks like at home, and how families can build connection and resilience into their everyday summer routines — without spending a lot of money or adding to an already full plate.
