COMPASSION
Doing outreach at Paladin has given me an opportunity to showcase the resources we have available to young people experiencing homelessness at HOPE 4 Youth. I frequently meet with the staff at Paladin to share what we do here at HOPE 4 Youth and think it is imperative to first inform those who have direct access to the students. By doing this, I have not only created relationships with the staff at Paladin but the youth as well. Because the youth trust staff, and the staff trust me, students are more comfortable sharing their stories with me and asking for assistance; especially if one of the staff has referred the student to me.
For example, as the outreach worker at Paladin, I introduced myself to students by asking trivial questions about homelessness, including resources, and for every right answer they earned candy. It felt more authentic to engage students with an educational tactic, as I didn’t feel comfortable asking students directly, “are you experiencing homelessness.” This creates an avenue for students to talk with me about resources. I was introduced to several young people who could benefit from resources and assisted them with understanding resources available to them, connecting them to our HOPE Homes program, and sharing information about Coordinated Entry – I also do assessments if necessary, for students at Paladin. I recently met with a minor who didn’t know what she was going to do as she was aging out of foster care in about a month. We worked together on how to approach her case worker and what questions she needed answers to. The next time I came in she found me and asked more questions as we went over some of the answers she received from her case worker. We came up with more questions, and this helped her create a list of housing options. With in a couple of weeks of meeting her, she had a several options and choose HOPE Place which she’ll be moving into on her 18th birthday.
Doing outreach at Paladin has been a great experience for me. It has provided me another way to directly help youth experiencing homelessness meet their needs and move towards their goals.
