Enhancing Investigations through FIGG

In May, Signature Science was on the ground in Decatur, GA for a two-day training course hosted by the National Criminal Justice Training Center (NCJTC). As sponsors of the training event, we were able to deliver a presentation in which we explained the laboratory methods and genealogical research that shape the FIGG process. We shared insights into our case review and strategic evidence selection processes we employ in order to maximize the potential for probative DNA results, and highlighted the value of partnering with a private laboratory. Attendees walked away from the training with insights into how investigative leads generated through FIGG can help lead to case resolution.

We were honored to engage with the analysts, prosecutors, detectives and detective supervisors who traveled from seven states to attend the training and are proud to support their continued education.

Next stop: Thornton, CO this September!

Strengthening Our Knowledge Base to Deliver New Solutions

Signature Science's Erin Gorden attended The Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on the Forensic Analysis of Human DNA held June 22-27 in Newry, Maine. Known for showcasing cutting-edge research, the 2025 iteration boasted thought-provoking presentations on topics such as techniques for challenging sample types, the use of machine learning and AI in forensics, and advancements in single cell analysis and microfluidics. The intimate setting and interactive format promoted meaningful discussion, allowing ample time to share new ideas and perspectives.

Attending these conferences is one of many ways our staff ensures that their knowledge base is current and constantly expanding. What we learn from industry leaders and peers directly informs our internal research priorities and ultimately translates into new forensics solutions that help our clients solve their toughest cases.

As Erin reported, "I returned from the conference with some new friends, many memories, plenty of new ideas, and truly inspired to continue to engage in research that can help push the field forward."

Our Interns are Making an Impact!

Each summer, Signature Science proudly welcomes interns to our Center for Advanced Genomics (CAG) to contribute to meaningful, hands-on research. The research and validations performed at the CAG are shared with the broader forensic community through open-source software, accessible peer-reviewed publications, and conference workshops and presentations. These efforts directly support the advancement of new tools and services for clients of our Forensic DNA practice. Our interns play a vital role in this process, gaining valuable laboratory experience while contributing to real-world forensic solutions.

Midway through their internship term, we caught up with our 2025 CAG Summer Interns, Maggie King and Veronica Poole, to hear about their experience so far and how their time at SigSci is shaping their academic and professional goals and interests.
