Collaboration During Crisis: A Multi-Laboratory Response to a Vendor Quality Issue
Plenary Session
When QIAGEN notified laboratories of reagent issues affecting DNA extraction yields, Signature Science and the Houston Forensic Science Center (HFSC) navigated a significant quality concern together, in an example of complex collaborative problem-solving. In this presentation, Ms. Wandzek alongside HFSC’s Manager of Forensic Biology, Ms. Courtney Head, will discuss how the two laboratories worked together to investigate the issue, evaluate potentially affected cases, and implement effective resolution strategies. The two will also explore key lessons learned, including the legal implications of quality issues in forensic casework and practical approaches to preparing clear, confident courtroom testimony when such challenges arise

| | Talking FIGG in Winter Wonderland | | |
Staff from our Advanced Genomics Laboratory traveled to Wisconsin Dells, WI to participate in the Wisconsin Police Leadership Foundation (WPLF) Winter Training Conference & Expo. While there are certainly states with warmer temperatures in February, it is hard to imagine a warmer reception than the one we received in "The Dells!"
Technical Leader of our Advanced Genomics Laboratory, Christina Neal, represented Signature Science Forensics at the event. She had the distinct pleasure of speaking at the Wisconsin Chiefs Board Meeting, where she was able to discuss FIGG and its applications with leaders from across the state. We also hosted an exhibitor booth, where we engaged in meaningful conversations about the cold cases that keep these dedicated law enforcement professionals up at night, and how they might leverage this new technology to generate a new lead. With instrument sensitivity rates capable of detecting trace amounts of DNA and emerging mixture resolution solutions on the horizon, we were proud to share with this crowd that if there is evidence, there is hope, even when it comes to the most challenging cases.

Interest in Forensic Investigative Genetic Genealogy is widespread and continues to grow with individuals outside of the law enforcement and forensic science communities. In January, we had an opportunity to share our insights with members of our local community in central Virginia, where our Advanced Genomics Laboratory is located!
Speaking as part of the series "Batesvillians (Batesville, VA) in Their Own Words," DNA Analyst Kelly Birmingham delivered a quick deep dive into DNA basics, the difference between SNPs and STRs, how genealogy can link an ancestor's DNA to a suspect's and the databases available for use in law enforcement investigations. In large part, the success of FIGG relies on public trust - trust that ones' genealogical data is used responsibly and with explicit permission, and trust that the science is solid enough to withstand courtroom testimony and uphold convictions or undoubtedly exonerate the innocent. In Batesville, we're proud to have had interesting, meaningful discussions at this event that may have contributed in a small way to building that trust.
