Surveyors’ coordinate systems for 2022 and beyond
GPS World
Ask anyone what time means to them, and they will give you a different answer. Benjamin Franklin famously stated that “time is money.” Time for the surveyor can mean being out in the field retracing a boundary, drafting a plat or working with a client to help them see their goals achieved.....
However, surveyors must be ready for the next big challenge: a national horizontal and vertical adjustment of the National Spatial Reference System (NSRS) into a new standard. The North American Terrestrial Reference Frame of 2022 (NATRF2022.) is currently being developed by NGS and will replace NAD83 and NAVD88. Most surveyors will ask why we are getting ready for a historic change in datums. Easy — it’s all about time.

Jefferson laid foundation of how land is measured
Kearney Hub
Our third president, Thomas Jefferson, was a man of many talents.
The author of the Declaration of Independence was not just a lawyer. He was a botanist, architect, philosopher, diplomat, and a prolific inventor and designer.....
Even though Jefferson never traveled west of the Appalachian Mountains, the township and range system of land measurement he created had a profound effect on the settlement of the U.S. West.
Jefferson wanted a more efficient way to divide land than the old “metes and bounds” system that colonists brought with them from England and used to establish land claims in the 13 colonies.

As one ‘Epp-ic’ career winds down another is set to go far
Craig Daily Press
Spending 50 years in one career is notable. Remarkable is continuing to love the work after so many years on the job.
Professional Land Surveyor Peter Epp has had such a career.
"I really like what I do. If I had a choice today, and God said: 'You can do whatever you want to do,' I would choose this," Epp said.
At age 68, Epp has decided to sell the business — Epp & Associates — and become semi-retired.

Flood Ready
Public Safety Canada
Flood Ready is a national public awareness campaign created to educate Canadians about the risks of overland flooding, and to encourage property owners and communities to take action before disaster strikes, especially in areas where the risks are high and there is a history of floods.
The campaign is part of Canada’s National Disaster Mitigation Program (NDMP), which was created to address rising flood risks and costs, and to build the foundation for informed mitigation investments that could reduce, or even negate, the effects of flood events.
The campaign is being led by Public Safety Canada on behalf of the Government of Canada.

Decided Guidance: Case Examinations: Wacker vs. Price—Part 2--The Concurring Opinion
The American Surveyor
We are back in Phoenix, Arizona this month. The Arizona Supreme Court went all gunsa-blazin' in Wacker vs. Price. I highlighted the decision and facts last month. This month we'll dissect the concurring opinion by Justice Phelps. So we get a bonus second set of eyes on the matter. Let's dive right in and see what Justice Phelps has to offer.
Justice Phelps opens up with a key observation "So far as the evidence in this case discloses there was never made an actual survey of Grand Avenue Addition, and certainly none that a survey was ever made with reference to a governmental monument at McDowell Road and 15th Avenue.

Surveyor's museum moves to new home
The Jamestown Sun
Most roads in North Dakota are built either straight north and south or east and west. That accuracy can be traced back more than a century to surveyors who mapped out the land, according to Russell Kastelle, a surveyor with 64 years of experience from Breckenridge, Minn.....
"This is most likely the largest collection of surveying equipment in the United States," he said. "We don't have a lot of stuff from the 1700s, but we do have a lot of old stuff."....
One of the instruments on display is a solar compass that Kastelle said was more accurate for determining direction than the magnetic compass.....
Along with the solar compass, the surveyor needed a set of readings, prepared by an observatory, giving the position of the sun for each hour of each day.

Surveying & Mapping Industry Economics: Part 4—State Of Recovery
The American Surveyor
This article continues an inquiry into the economic conditions of the Surveying and Mapping industry (NAICS 541370) using data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The prior articles presented information on the industry at the national level. This article is based on the County Business Pattern data at the state level. The 2015 data was released on 4/20/2017. The employee count in 13 states is not consistently reported by the U.S. Census Bureau in order to prevent disclosing the operations of individual employers. The total of the 50 states is lower than the national total by about 10 to 1000 employees in a given year.

Thought Leader: Preparing Surveyors for the Future
The American Surveyor
The decline in the number of individuals seeking licensure has raised concerns about the future of the profession. A logical solution to this problem is to find ways to make more surveyors. Some say the requirement for a BS in Surveying should be dropped. After all, there are few colleges offering this degree. Others suggest the number years and type of experience could be eased. Some have proposed a national license or simpler ways for surveyors to work across state boundaries.

The new world of Earth-fixed datums
Spatial Source
Much has been said in recent times about Australia moving towards a dynamic datum. GDA2020 is a tentative step in this direction and most likely will be the final plate-fixed geodetic datum for Australia.
The coordinate shift between GDA94 and GDA2020 will be between 1.5 metres in south-east Australia and 1.8 metres in Western Australia, which largely accounts for tectonic rotation of the Australian plate from 1994 projected to 2020.

Transition of an Era
Hyro International
For the future of hydrography it is necessary to think differently and of course adjust the business to that new way of thinking. That not only applies to hydrography, but to many fields close to hydrography and fields that hydrography delivers data to. A few weeks ago I visited the Port of Rotterdam and after a little tour on the water, the CEO of the Port of Rotterdam, Mr Allard Castelein, gave us a presentation on the future of the port’s business and what is needed for sustainable future growth in a world where some countries can build ports the size of Rotterdam in a decade (whereas it took Rotterdam 70 years!).
