Dear Volunteers and Changemakers,

Every day, I have the privilege of witnessing something extraordinary.

I see individuals show up, often quietly, without recognition, to give their time, their skills, and their hearts to others. And in doing so, they change lives in ways that ripple far beyond a single moment.

During National Volunteer Week, we pause to recognize and celebrate you, our volunteers. But the truth is, your impact cannot be contained to just one week.

Because of you students feel supported and seen.

Because of you older adults remain connected and engaged.

Because of you nonprofits are stronger, more effective, and better equipped to meet growing needs.

You step in where there are gaps. You bring compassion where there is challenge. You offer leadership, creativity, and care in ways that truly transform what is possible.

At HandsOn Suburban Chicago, we talk about the power of volunteerism, but what that really means is YOU. You are the power behind every program, every partnership, and every moment of impact. What inspires me most is not just what you do, but how you do it. With generosity. With commitment. With a belief that even small actions can create meaningful change.

As we look ahead, the needs in our communities continue to grow. And so does the opportunity to step forward, to lead, and to build stronger, more connected communities together. Thank you for being part of this work. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for believing in the power of service.

With deep gratitude,

Recently, we brought nonprofit leaders together through a forum, small group conversations, one-to-one discussions, and surveys to better understand what they need most right now.

What we heard was clear. Our more than 100 nonprofit partners are deeply rooted in our communities. They are serving neighbors every day, often the first to respond to growing needs and the closest to the challenges families, older adults, and students face.

But they are doing this while navigating reduced resources and increasing demand. Leaders shared they need stronger community visibility and fundraising support, including help with grant writing, relationship building, communications, and social media, so more people understand and invest in their work. They need volunteers on the ground to stock, sort, organize spaces, serve meals, and more.

They all shared something critical. Volunteers are not just helpful. They are essential.

Volunteers bring more than extra hands. They bring skills, ideas, professional experience, creativity, and compassion that help nonprofits build capacity and expand what is possible.

That is why, as your Volunteer Center, we are focused on connecting passionate, caring, and talented people with nonprofits that need their help. We are taking action to strengthen these connections so that nonprofits have the people and resources they need to serve our communities.

When volunteers and nonprofits come together, it builds stronger organizations, stronger connections, and stronger communities. We are grateful every day for our volunteers who step forward and for the nonprofit leaders who recognize the value and talent they bring.
