TWO-DAY SYMPOSIUM "MIGRATION & THE CLIMATE
In the context of climate migration, "is Houston a city in Texas, or something else entirely?" From the organizers' standpoint, Houston is imagined as a convergence zone with a tangled and frayed history; a confluence of colonization, land rights, war, water, ecological precarity, histories of museums, state policy, and fossil capitalism.
Join organizers Air Alliance Houston, Rice Center for Environmental Studies, and the Houston Climate Justice Museum for a two-day convening of artists, scholars, and community leaders to explore the intersection of the climate crisis and migration.
Day One at Rice University focuses on the Mexico-US border and the policies, institutions, and histories that have led to the ongoing border crisis.
Day Two at POST Houston looks to the global and the local, untangling migration and the climate crisis through understanding foodways and colonial histories in Texas and beyond.
Throughout the event, participants will be asked how dominant visions, stories, and histories of Houston can be remade through stories of migration and transition.
