Local Author Spotlight

Cathy is a proud member of SCBWI, IBPA, and the Writers League of Texas. She's represented by her fantastic literary agent, Keely Boeving of WordServe Literary.

Cathy is a Houston-based elementary school speaker and author of two indie picture books: Arthur Zarr’s Amazing Art Car and Yazzy’s Amazing Yarn.

This has offered her the opportunity to present about writing, inspiration, and creativity at more than 150 elementary schools, bookstores, and children’s museums in Texas, Louisiana, and other states. She is also sometimes asked to speak at writer's workshops and local women's clubs, which she jokingly refers to as her "grownup talks," noting that kids are an easier audience.

When she's not writing or presenting to children, you might find her showing off by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance … in Latin! Cathey has a background in journalism and public relations, a Master of Arts, and is now writing middle grade novels that she hopes to someday see on bookshelves.

Illustrator Corner

Calling all illustrators! We want to feature you! Please submit your completed works to newsletter.scbwihou@gmail.com for a chance to be featured in an upcoming newsletter.

DrawThis Prompt!

The January prompt is: PI

Pi Day is observed annually on March 14th in celebration of the mathematical constant π. Create an illustration related to the word Pi.

Every month we develop a long list of potential #scbwiDrawThis prompts to choose one word or phrase that will challenge our illustrator members to dig deep and draw. Our goal is to find words rooted in a unique action, mood, point of view, or character theme. We also hope this practice will help you develop new art for your growing portfolios. Share your work with us! Share it often, online and in your member profile page on https://www.scbwi.org/galleries. We want to see what you create!
