THIS!

Sydney Dunlap's middle grade novel It Happened on Saturday has been nominated for the Reading the West Awards, named to the Oklahoma Library Association's Intermediate Sequoyah Masterlist, and is a finalist as a Foreword Indies Book of the Year for Juvenile Fiction.

Lynne Kelly should set camp at Buc-ee's! The first chapter of her new book, The Secret Language of Birds, takes place there, and she's received wonderful news during her last two Buc-ees stops! Both The Secret Language of Birds and Song For a Whale made the USA Today bestseller list, and The Secret Language of Birds is on the Indie Bestsellers List.

Lynne was also interviewed on a recent episode of Houston Life.

is not part of our regularly scheduled member news, but take a moment to look at how many Houstonians showed up in Austin for the All Y'all conference. We were an impressive group with the combined star power of a red supergiant. And combined is how we will inspire the next Big Bang and begin our fantastic (albeit, fictional) universe. GO HOUSTON!

Okay, the corny section of this newsletter has ended. Back to our regularly scheduled awesomeness.

Local Illustrator Spotlight: Meghan Senkel

Meghan has been absolutely crushing it! After dedicating herself to the chapter as our RA, she stepped down to focus on her craft. And boy, is it paying off! We're thrilled to announce that Meghan has clinched this year's Emerging Voice Mentorship, showcasing her outstanding talent and dedication.

As Meghan tells it, she has dabbled in several mediums including photography, ceramics, and illustrated journals. Through it all, she always imagined herself as an author. Her pre-child self thought it would be for a sprawling novel; but parenthood led her to rediscover the complexity, joy, and complete artistry of a deceptively simple picture book.

What is this Emerging Voice Mentorship?

As Austin's Laura Fisk explains: The Emerging Voice Mentorship is a yearlong mentorship given out to an illustrator who does incredible work with room to grow. This mentorship happens over the course of the following year. Meghan will work with PAL member from the Austin chapter, C.S. Jennings. He is the author-illustrator or illustrator of many books, including the Pet Shop Racers series coming out later this year with Disney Hyperion. The purpose is to work one-on-one with an experienced, published illustrator to both push the mentee's work and help them see where they'd like their career to go and how to get there. It's a great opportunity to push yourself with accountability!

And I'm sure you couldn't help but notice our own Paula Rodriguez standing on stage next to Meghan! She is the Portfolio Showcase Honor winner. We have a lot of talent in this chapter!

DrawThis Prompt!

The May prompt is: PRINCE

Every month we develop a long list of potential #scbwiDrawThis prompts to choose one word or phrase that will challenge our illustrator members to dig deep and draw. Our goal is to find words rooted in a unique action, mood, point of view, or character theme. We also hope this practice will help you develop new art for your growing portfolios. Share your work with us! Share it often, online and in your member profile page on https://www.scbwi.org/galleries. We want to see what you create!
