About Us

Houston Events

Welcome to July, Houston SCBWI!

I'm a poet and didn't even - yeah, I went there.

Methinks its too hot to be wearing a jacket! It's also too short a month, with only 31 days to make all our creative dreams come true before life ramps up again.

Did you realize that? July is the only month when most of us adults are not focusing half our brain cells on school duties, or celebrating the last day of school, or buying supplies for the start of the new school year. It is also my birth month, but that has nothing to do with #goals.

So, what’s the goal? Write! Paint!

Let’s park ourselves somewhere fresh and exciting, maybe in a shady spot by the pool (it doesn't have to be OUR pool) and create new scenes. Sure, we’ll take breaks to count heads and reapply sunscreen, but this is our chance to set a self-imposed challenge that’s energetic and fun.

If locking yourself in an office sounds appealing, go for it! But if that’s grown stale, treat your brain to a new environment and a drink garnished with fruit. You deserve it.

Oh! But don't forget, you can also carve out more creative time at the retreat – registration is now open! If you need that extra bit of help, please apply for a scholarship (details below and on the retreat website).

*Also, I ate this fortune cookie, but I saved the fortune inside. It was for all of us. It reads: Tomorrow your creative side will shine forth with exceptional ideas."

It didn't state which tomorrow, so let's assume it meant all of them.

Yours truly,

Annie Harmon

July Meeting

This zoom meeting is a hands-on workshop in which Mel will explain the importance of dummy books for authors (length, pace, getting going, anticipation, text per spread, etc.) and demonstrate how PB dummies can be created with the Ourboox and Dummyboox platforms. You will make a physical mini-book in three minutes with three pieces of paper and scissors, and a simple hack with MS Word. Great for writers and illustrators!

Read more on Mel in the interview on our chapter blog.

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

The smallest ray of sunshine can start a leaf to turn and look with hope. I want to be the sunshine that creates that moment for at least one leaf every day.

A Happy Story

While looking for a happy book

I noticed a new choice on my shelf.

I know for sure

that I did not

put it there myself.

I decided to check the new book out.

I was curious to see

from where it came,

why it was there,

or who left it there for me.

Pulling it from the others-

Excited! What’s inside?

Looking for the title page,

my eyes went open wide!

There were many empty pages,

but

also

little

note.

It was from a friend, and addressed to me.

And here's what my friend wrote.

"You always want a happy book

to read when you’re alone.

So I’m giving you this empty book.

Now you can write

your own.

"I want to hear a happy story,

which I'm sure your book will be.

And I can't wait

for that happy time

when you're reading it to me!"
