I love the promise of spring and the possibilies present in new life emerging from plants, trees, and nests of all sorts like my clutter of stacked papers from the past year next to my desk in Provincetown which I'm finally weeding out as we prepare for renovations.
In 2012, HOW purchased our home at 34 Conwell Street, securing our roots and a sustainable future. Thirteen years later, with a larger team and community of client members, we will be refreshing and refurnishing the Provincetown center with more areas to gather in small groups for social or work conversations. Perhaps most important is the focus on a comfortable, welcoming lounge area where any member of the HOW community can drop by for a cup of tea or coffee, conversation, and community.
To complete the renovations, our Provincetown location will be closed for a few months, so we've secured a temporary office space at 46 Bradford Street, Provincetown on the lower level of The Commons building, where HOW clients can meet in person with staff. We will remain available by phone, email, and in-person visits at our Eastham office or the temporary 46 Bradford Street office.
So with the arrival of spring, as much as there are signs of hope in the natural world, the new season signals change. Change can be challenging, but it also brings opportunities for growth, collaboration, and resilience. Our team pictured below is ready to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of this time away from our Provincetown home. We hope you will join us with patience and hope as we anticipate the renewal of HOW's home port.
Let me introduce you to the amazing team that brings our mission into action every day here at HOW;

As the owner of the famous Lobster Pot in Provincetown, Joy McNulty has long been recognized as a community leader and problem-solver. Joy served on the Helping Our Women Board from 2009 to 2020. Acting as Treasurer during most of her tenure, she helped to grow the balance sheet from $189,000 in 2009 to just over $1 million in 2019, enabling HOW to purchase its center in Provincetown. Her leadership and financial guidance - along with the other Board members, volunteers, donors, and client members - helped HOW to achieve a level of sustainability that has been the foundation of our growth over the past several years.
Awarded HOW’s Betty Villari Community Service Award in 2020, Joy exemplified the spirit of kindness, generosity, and community support that the award honors in memory of its namesake, Betty Villari. Ann Maguire said of her good friend Joy, “If something happens in town, she’s like a first responder, asking what is it that we can do? And she’s trained her kids the same way.”
The HOW community is grateful to have had Joy as a part of our family and grateful to Joy’s family for supporting the creation of the Joy McNulty Memorial Fund at HOW.

Meet HOW Volunteer Jayne! | |
Jayne Carvelli-Sheehan is the Chair of the Helping Our Women Board of Directors, and she walks the talk. Generous with both her time and her insight, Jayne is resolute in her determination to better the lives of women on the Outer Cape and to meet the needs of the greater good. We are so appreciative to have a leader who guides the HOW community with such empathy, fortitude, and wit.
When asked, "What would you tell someone interested in becoming a HOW Volunteer?"
Jayne replied, "I would tell them that they possess the "Power of One" to impact someone's life, sometimes in simple ways, sometimes in profound ways . . . and while you may never know the exact moment you do, that opportunity, that "being in the space" to impact someone in need, is both an honor and privilege, and there is no better reward in life than that."
In 2023, Jayne gave 130 hours to the HOW community for which she received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, earning the Bronze Award Level.
