HPC NEWS  | Summer 2022

CS_Shadows_DropShadow_Black-0005 image

Hello Haley,

Cape Cod is bustling with activity as summer residents and vacationers enjoy a vibrant seasonal economy, and local workers are providing services in restaurants, grocery stores, and shops. The scenario sounds like a win-win for everyone, but our workforce continues to face hardship. We’re all noticing dramatic price increases on staple products, groceries, and much-loved seasonal favorites. Inflation is this year’s challenge for local workers who hold two, and sometimes three, high-season jobs but whose earnings are eroding because of ongoing increases in food, rent, and utilities.

As always, HPC steps in to help struggling individuals and families stay in their homes. Not one family served by HPC entered an emergency shelter in 2021, and we plan to match that record for the remainder of 2022.

This issue of HPC News highlights a few of the ways HPC assists community members. Training and empowerment through our REACH program is helping one micro-entrepreneur this summer; see his story below. The new Lower Cape Housing & ADU Resource Center, which offers housing stabilization funds to qualified residents and informs homeowners about the financial benefit of creating accessory dwelling units to ease Cape Cod’s housing crisis, is another valuable resource available to our residents.

Our goal is to foster a community where everyone can thrive—a key component of Cape Cod living.

Today as you read my message, consider a financial donation to HPC to support our community’s workforce. Your gift right now will make a meaningful difference to struggling individuals and families on Cape Cod.

Best and be well,

Hadley Luddy

Chief Executive Officer

REACH Graduate Launches Landscaping Micro-enterprise

JJ, a lifelong resident of the Lower Cape, began a career in landscaping with an established company. After years of working for someone else, he decided to branch out and start his own operation—and he turned to HPC’s REACH Project for help in charting a business path. JJ enrolled in the four-month self-sufficiency initiative and his serious and steadfast commitment was evident from the start. He never missed an individualized coaching class or goal-setting session with his case manager. He was also dedicated to the curriculum’s mindfulness practice, which taught him how to step beyond the hustle and bustle of fast-paced Cape Cod life to think about and envision the next step in his career. In the final REACH weeks, JJ decided that the best use of the $2,000 stipend associated with the program would be to purchase a dump trailer to haul materials and equipment.

Since graduating from the program in June 2022, JJ has launched Scape Cod—a graphic designer friend of his family helped with the logo—and welcomed a steady flow of landscaping jobs, including hauling brush and delivering gravel. He relies on his HPC REACH mindfulness skills to manage the stress that comes with a one-person operation. “In the morning at 7 a.m., driving to a job site, I think about what I need to accomplish in my workday, how many jobs, and at what locations—plus weather factors that come into play,” JJ said.

Housing Stabilization Fund for Families in Need

In partnership with the new Lower Cape Housing & ADU Resource Center, HPC offers Housing Stabilization Funds for year round residents of the Lower & Outer Cape. These funds can help residents from Harwich to Provincetown who may not qualify for other types of support, or who need additional assistance to maintain their housing.

If you are in need or know someone in need, please contact our office at (508) 255-9667 or by email at referrals@HPCcapecod.org.

To learn the range of services provided by HPC and the Community Development Partnership, visit our stabilization fund page below.

Rental Assistance

Rental Assistance for full time residents of Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown is another resource that offers a stipend to bridge the gap between an individual’s income and the high cost of rent on the Outer Cape. Rents skyrocket during the Cape Cod high season, disproportionately affecting people who provide essential services for our bustling economy.

Refer a person in need by calling 508-255-9667 or emailing referrals@HPCcapecod.org. Year-round residents of these four towns may be eligible for rental assistance.
