Hartford Public Library received a $211,194 grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services to fund a new digital literacy training program.
“This was a very competitive process, and our success in securing federal grants is a testament to the reputation, proven results, grant writing skills and experience of our This American Place staff, under the leadership of Homa Naficy,” said Bridget Quinn-Carey, Hartford Public Library’s president and CEO.
The funded projects were selected from 1,701 applications. The grants will support only 68 museum and library service projects that will take place over the next two years.
The funding will enable HPL to provide critical digital literacy skills training for Hartford residents.

Hartford Public Library, in partnership with the Greater Hartford Arts Council, will host a conversation and performance, called “Indigenous Futures” taking place on Monday, October 12 at 6 pm.
This Indigenous Peoples’ day, hear local Indigenous peoples’ visions for tomorrow. How do we continue decolonizing the land, our communities, as well as our minds and hearts? What does a pro-Indigenous future look like? Hear perspectives from Indigenous artists, academics, and community leaders.

New Pickup Locations Available |
Contact-free pickup of library materials will now be available at three additional branches starting Monday, October 5.
Appointments for pickup will be available at the following locations:
- Mondays, Park Street Library, 744 Park Street
- Tuesdays, Dwight Library, 7 New Park Avenue
- Thursdays, Barbour Library, 261 Barbour Street
Contact-free pickup is already offered at the Downtown Library, Campfield Library, and the Albany Library.
Customers can place a hold on library materials online or over the phone. They can then make an appointment to safely pick up their materials.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Graciela Rivera, branch manager of the Park Street Library and curator of HPL's Spanish language collection, has put together a collection of important fiction and non-fiction books written by Hispanic/Latino authors.
"When I think of Hispanic Heritage month, I think of an array of Hispanic/Latino authors who although they may not live here, have made an impact on the United States through their writing," Rivera said.
Rivera has assembled a fascinating list of writers, including Julia Alvarez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Reyna Grande, and Sandra Cisneros.

The Awakening Book Club will continue October 15 at 6 pm with Ijeoma Oluo's book "So You Want To Talk About Race."
The club hopes to create a safe and open space for young adults to connect around a good book. The biweekly discussion series will center on a book of the month that prompts much needed conversation about past and present racial injustices.

Hartford Public Library will be offering a Security Officer Training Program twice a month at our Sands/Ropkins Library location at 1750 Main Street. Classes are limited to 10 participants per session. All participants are required to wear masks at all times in the facility and should practice social distancing.
The program is approved by the State of Connecticut and conducted by a certified instructor. The successful completion of this one-day program will qualify candidates to apply for a Security Officer ID card, issued by the State of Connecticut Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection.
