"Tony had an innate ability to make anyone feel good about themselves. His knowledge was only exceeded by his heart.  When I was going through a really rough patch he told me to keep smiling defiantly at the world no matter what it threw at me, and he led by example.  And then followed it up with that laugh of his. Talking with Tony could always make everything feel all right. " - Adrian K., HQ Personal Trainer

Tony has been ill for several weeks and passed away unexpectedly Monday afternoon. Tony was a key member of our HealthQuest family and was an integral part of the history of the club. In fact, Tony is credited for coming up with the HealthQuest name.

Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with his wife Lyn and his family.

More About Tony:

Tony Tierno discovered a love for fitness at an early age.  He coupled that love with his caring nature to make a difference in the lives of all those who were fortunate enough to meet him.  Tony has been at HealthQuest since its founding and was instrumental in transitioning Gold's Gym into this great HealthQuest community.  He became the Club's original Fitness Director and a Master Trainer. By his side throughout the years was his loving wife, Lyn Tierno; also a HealthQuest personal trainer.  During his time at HealthQuest, Tony pioneered and developed a multi-facted strength and conditioning program for athletes ages 10-18, while also
training athletes of all levels including high school, college, professional, All-American, and Olympic champions.

He trained and made a difference in the lives of countless personal training clients, co-workers, and members over the years.  Tony even assisted Arnold Schwartzenegger with the "Great American Workout" at the White House under the Presidency of George W. Bush.

Tony's work was highly acknowledged throughout New Jersey and the Nation.  The Gold's Gym International Humanitarian Award was presented to him in 1992.  He was inducted into the National Power Lifters Grandmasters Hall of Fame in 1999 and the NJ Scholastic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.  Tony's ever-present kindness and caring for others also earned him a Citizen of the Year Award from the Flemington Elks Lodge in 2004.  No award, however, could match the enjoyment Tony got from interacting with the entire HealthQuest community on a daily basis.

In fact,  one of Tony's roles that he held dear, had less to do with fitness and everything to do with imparting joy on our youngest members.  For many years Tony was HealthQuest's resident Santa Claus at the club's annual Breakfast with Santa!

Outside of his work at HealthQuest, Tony was passionate about, and took great pride in, working with the Special Olympics of New Jersey.  He was involved with the organization since 1986, eventually becoming the State Director and Head Coach of the New Jersey Team USA for the Special Olympics. His athletes hold many state, national, and world records. Tony also took interest in gardening, Native American Regalia, and horses.

Tony will be missed greatly but the wisdom and positivity he imparted on those around him will live on forever. He left an everlasting mark on HealthQuest and the entire community, and for that, thank you Tony...your memory will live on at HealthQuest and in the hearts and minds of all who had the honor of knowing you.
