A successful team is more than a group of people working in the same location.
A successful team is one that is cohesive, energetic, and has a shared focused on accomplishing their goals and meeting the needs of their customers.
Building and maintaining a successful team requires ongoing effort. Team building can take on many different forms. Some may find a retreat or facilitated meetings as an effective method of team building. Others may prefer to partake in a less structured atmosphere with games and other fun filled after-hours recreational activities. The HR team recently went to the Akron Rubber Ducks game for a little after-hours team building.
Let us know what your team likes to do or what you’ve done this year. Please send in any pictures along with your comments on what team building activities you enjoy. These ideas will be shared in the next HR newsletter. Pictures and comments can be sent to Emily Sweat at esweat@akronohio.gov.

Welcome to Hispanic Heritage Month. Where Latinos come together to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. My goal has always been to identify, inspire and connect Latino leaders in the community, classrooms, and workforce. Learning that the City of Akron has a small Hispanic population, I have made it my new goal, and challenge anyone of the Hispanic decent to identify themselves and use their platform for other Hispanic women and men. Being a Hispanic American woman, starting my own nonprofit, gave me so many aspirations and motivation to keep going.
Hispanic families migrate to the States, with the goal of a better lifestyle, a chance at success. At the cost of what exactly? Our lack of tradition, the use of our native tongue, our lack music choice. If it weren’t for restaurants, food would be on the list as well.
What Hispanic parents have failed to realize; United States also faces struggles. Crime, violence, discrimination, poverty. But Determination is what keeps a Hispanic new to this country going. That their children will prosper.
Being the first born in American soil, I take pride in being bilingual, cooking authentic dishes, dancing to merengues, salsas, and bachata’s on a Saturday morning while cleaning. Keeping culture in my home is a must. I would love for our fellow Hispanic City of Akron Employees to do the same. We may be small in numbers. However, I do know that we can compensate with pride.

I recently reached out to Nancy, from Proyecto Raices. Proyecto Raices is located right here in Akron. They provide educational and social support to children of Latino/Hispanic families residing in the Akron area, facilitate their integration to the local community and the maintenance of their cultural heritage.
