What's in a Job Description?
One of the first things we tackle for new clients utilizing Managed HR is a review and update of job descriptions. We often dub the job description, alongside the handbook, as an essential part of a company's 'HR infrastructure'.
What is so important about a job description? More than most realize! Here are a few reasons why job descriptions matter:
Expectations - This document 'puts to paper' the expectations you have for your employee, which includes duties, responsibilities, experience and skillsets required to complete the job in question. This objective tool will spill over into performance management when employers must assess whether an employee is performing to standard, keeping everyone accountable including the employer, in remaining fair and objective.
Compensation - Pay range should be reflective of job requirements and qualifications. This seems like a no-brainer, but in a world of inflated job titles, the job description will, or should, set things straight. This will positively or negatively impact recruitment and retention.
Compliance - Good job descriptions include the specific knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the job. In cases where ADA compliance, work comp or other circumstances require reasonable workplace accommodations to be made, the properly developed and updated job description will aid you. The same is true for classification of exempt and non-exempt status. If duties of the job do not match the exemption status, you'll be in Wage and Hour hot water!
Organizational Development - Job descriptions are essential when it's time to examine training and development needs, gaps in organizational knowledge, and succession planning. They will help your employees with career development planning and your organization when assessing changes in staff during times of growth or re-structuring.
