Justice for Immigrants Team and Supporters,
I want to update you on House legislative developments to protect Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders. As you know, on March 15, 2019, on behalf of the USCCB's Committee on Migration, Bishop Joe Vásquez endorsed and
sent a letter of support for
H.R. 6, which provides a pathway to citizenship for qualifying Dreamers and TPS and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) holders.
H.R. 6 was expected to be marked up on May 8th in the House Judiciary Committee (HJC), followed by a committee vote for passage to the House floor and, eventually, a full House vote. This markup was postponed, however, due to political concerns.
We have learned that tomorrow, May 22nd, there will be a markup in HJC of legislation protecting Dreamers and TPS/DED holders. However, due to different competing political pressures, the markup will not be on H.R. 6 but instead will be on three bills - two that address the contents of H.R. 6 and one that addresses TPS for Venezuela:
- Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard's Dream Act,
- Rep Nydia Velazquez's Promise Act, which would be the TPS-DED bill; and
- Rep Darren Soto's TPS for Venezuela bill.
In preparation for tomorrow's consideration by the HJC, Bishop Vásquez has endorsed all three bills. Please see the letter
here
.
How can you support House legislative efforts to protect Dreamers and TPS/DED holders?

website.
