Chairman's Message

Aloha HRA Members,

As we extend our warmest Aloha greetings, I trust that each of you experienced fruitful business during the recent holiday season. As we step into the promising year of 2024, it's only natural to ponder what lies ahead for us.

A special expression of gratitude goes to the renowned celebrity chef Guy Fieri, an American restaurateur and culinary icon. His immense generosity has resulted in the collection of a substantial $1.2 million, earmarked for aiding those affected by the Maui Fire. The funds will be channeled through the Hawaii Restaurant Association (HRA) and another nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the needy.

I want to acknowledge the commendable efforts of our Executive Director, Sheryl Matsuoka, and her administrative team. They have collaborated with the American Savings Bank and Fiserv to administer the funds to Lahanai restaurant workers affected by the wildfires. The collective aim is to ensure all funds raised by Chef Fieri directly benefit those in need.

I hope you can join us on January 29th for the HRA Legislative Meet and Greet which presents an opportunity to engage with lawmakers concerning matters crucial to our food service industry. It's a platform to articulate our perspectives and advocate for laws that favor the flourishing of our restaurants.

Another significant event is the Hawaii Hotel and Restaurant Show (HHRS), where the HRA plays a pivotal role. This event serves as a selling platform for our vendors to showcase the latest and trendiest products for our esteemed food service establishments. This year, in addition to an impressive array of seafood, meat, and green products, there will be a pronounced focus on the integration of technology within restaurant services. Vendors specializing in menu printing and point-of-sale systems tailored for the service sector will be prominently featured. This promises to be the largest restaurant show, hosted at the Blaisdell this year. I strongly encourage our Allied members to consider securing a booth to showcase your products and services. For those planning to attend, free early online registration is now available.

As we embrace the auspicious year of the Dragon, I extend my heartfelt wishes to each of you to be in high spirits and experience prosperity akin to the legendary dragon.

Federal Legislation Introduced to Permanently Repeal Death Tax

Known as the Death Tax Repeal Act, this legislation would permanently repeal the death tax, which imposes an unfair and costly tax on the transfer of property, land, and other assets from a deceased family member to heirs of family farms and small businesses.

Over 95% of our nation’s small businesses are owned and operated by individuals and families, and this legislation would enable these multigenerational businesses to continue to support their families without having to pay a devastating tax upon the death of a family member.

The death tax represents double taxation at its worst. Small business owners, especially restaurants, grieving the loss of a loved one, should not face an enormous tax bill from the federal government just to continue the family tradition of keeping their business open and operational.

Protect Yourself from Cyber Harm

Create a culture of security by implementing a regular employee training schedule and by updating them about new risks and vulnerabilities.

Cybercriminals target companies of all sizes, but small and independent businesses, like restaurants and retail operations, can face the greatest risk. The reason: They often lack the security infrastructure that larger businesses possess to adequately protect the systems that store, access, and disseminate the data they collect. That’s why knowing and practicing some cybersecurity basics can help reduce the risk of cyberattacks now and in the future.
