Chairman's Message
Dear Members,
I want to convey my deep gratitude for the tremendous success of HRA's Annual Hall of Fame gala. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering dedication of our staff and volunteers, who tirelessly worked to create a truly memorable occasion. It is an accomplishment that will be etched in our collective memory for years to come.
As we look to the future, we are confronted with a significant challenge - the proposed Sit Lie Law Ban, against which a lawsuit has been filed by ACLU to the city. If this law is enacted, it would grant houseless individuals the freedom to lay down anywhere on the streets of Honolulu, with the Honolulu Police Department powerless to intervene. Such a law could have severe consequences, especially for street-side restaurants. I implore all of our members to raise their voices in opposition. Allowing this law to pass would likely lead to an increase in the number of houseless individuals on our streets, potentially resulting in chaos. We need law and order to maintain civility in our public spaces.
In the coming months, we anticipate a surge in bookings, a thriving economy, and a united effort among restaurant members to support one another. Hawai'i will forever be our home, and post-pandemic, restaurants will play a vital role in rejuvenating our state's economy.
In the meantime, I would like to encourage everyone to support Kōkua for Maui Restaurant Day - Maui Relief and Recovery by contributing a portion of your proceeds to your favorite nonprofits, such as the Salvation Army and Maui Strong. HRA is organizing this initiative on the first Tuesday of every month. Each participating restaurant chooses the organization(s) to donate their funds to assist those in need. Kōkua for Maui!
In these challenging times, let us remember that our sense of community and shared responsibility can help us overcome any obstacle. Together, we can build a brighter future for Hawai'i.
Ave Kwok
