HRAF Summer Institutes Concludes in Third Year
The three-year NSF-supported HRAF Summer Institutes on Cross-Cultural Anthropological Research concluded earlier this month. The second edition of the HRAF Academic Quarterly has been published by Dr. Francine Barone, Director of Academic Development & Operations. Since the eHRAF legacy applications were officially discontinued on July 31, we are offering another eHRAF webinar for librarians and faculty who need assistance with navigating the new applications. We are pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the HRAF Global Scholars Program 2024. The application deadline is October 1, 2023.
Our third and final NSF-supported HRAF Summer Institute for Cross-Cultural Anthropological Research was held on the Yale University campus this summer. It was an intense and exciting three weeks for the instructors and the 12 participants that included a hefty mix of instruction, hands-on exercises, and designing a cross-cultural mini-project.

HRAF Summer Institutes were supported by the National Science Foundation in a grant to the Human Relations Area Files (BCS #2020156). The HRAF Summer Institutes were designed to train faculty, researchers, and advanced graduate students in the theory and state-of-the art methods for conducting regional and worldwide comparative research using anthropological data. An additional aim was to prepare materials that can be incorporated into methods courses and online platforms to assist others wishing to learn about cross-cultural methods.

The HRAF Academic Quarterly features some of the exciting research accomplished using HRAF data from the eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology databases as well as Explaining Human Culture (EHC), Teaching eHRAF, and other open access materials from HRAF.

In our current issue, we are delighted to share new publications from a variety of fields and perspectives, including cultural evolution; archaeology; evolutionary ecology; biogeography and conservation; religion; material culture and sensory experience; body-based measurement units; COVID-19; and metadata, library science, and ethics. You will also find an overview of recent, ongoing and/or upcoming research and presentations by HRAF staff and affiliates.

HRAF is pleased to announce that we are accepting applications for the HRAF Global Scholars Program 2024. This program provides scholars around the world with one year of complimentary access to both of our databases, eHRAF World Cultures and eHRAF Archaeology.
Should further access be desired beyond the award year, memberships are available in our lowest dues category.

The application deadline is October 1, 2023. Awardees will be notified in December and access to the eHRAF databases will be granted for the 2023 calendar year.

The webinar will take place via Zoom on August 23 at 11:00 AM ET and will be led by Matthew Longcore, Director of Membership and Outreach, and Danielle Russell, Research Assistant. The webinar will last approximately one hour, with training followed by time for questions and answers. Extra time beyond the scheduled hour will available to answer questions as needed. The link to register is below.
