HRAF celebrates Anthropology Day 2021
HRAF looks forward to celebrating our second annual HRAF x UConn Anthropology Day. We have a full set of virtual activities planned, including guest speakers from HRAF, an anthropology social hour, and UConn Honors student project presentations. For those interested in pursuing graduate studies in anthropology or a related field, applications are now being accepted for our exciting paid internship opportunities in honor of former President, Melvin Ember. Five brand new teaching activities have been added to our Introduction to Archaeology workbook. Finally, please join us in welcoming our two new team members, Sridhar Ravula and Aishwarya Kumar, who are contributing to the development of our NSF-funded iKLEWS Project.
HRAF will host our second annual Anthropology Day event in collaboration with the UConn Stamford Anthropology Society. This year we will have a virtual event via Zoom. Dr. Carol Ember and our two Melvin Ember Interns, Benjamin Gonzalez and Daniel McCloskey, will discuss cross-cultural research, areas of academic interest, and internship experiences. UConn Honors students will share their Nascent Worlds projects.

Nascent Worlds, produced by HRAF’s digital anthropologist, Dr. Francine Barone, is a fun and engaging build-your-own-culture learning activity which allows students to be as creative as they like in exploring and applying the anthropological concept of culture. Matthew Longcore, HRAF’s member services manager, teaches anthropology and archaeology courses at UConn Stamford and is the club advisor.

HRAF is pleased to announce a one-year full-time internship in honor of Melvin Ember, President of HRAF from 1987 until his passing in 2009. The purpose of the internship is to learn about cross-cultural research through practical experience. Duties include reading and analyzing recent cross-cultural research with the goal of summarizing materials in Explaining Human Culture, as well as participating in ongoing cross-cultural research projects.

Interns will be reimbursed for living expenses and travel costs. Preference will be given to candidates who intend to pursue graduate study in anthropology or a closely related field, or who have already started graduate school. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to perform statistical analyses and have accomplished academic records, particularly in their major fields and in anthropology courses.
HRAF is pleased to welcome two new team members, Sridhar Reddy Ravula and Aishwarya Kumar, who have joined us for our NSF-supported iKLEWS project.

Sridhar, our development team leader, recently completed his Ph.D. in Data Science at the Harrisburg University of Science & Technology.

Aishwarya is currently completing her MS in Information Systems at Northeastern University, with a concentration in Data Science.

Our new team members bring a broad range of expertise and skills to HRAF and the iKLEWS project.
HRAF is continuing to produce a set of activities for our new Introduction to Archaeology workbook.

The latest workbooks include Dating Methods and a series of Great Discoveries activities on the following topics:

  • Machu Picchu
  • Cahokia
  • Chavín de Huántar
  • Stonehenge

We expect to showcase our next set of workbook activities based on the eHRAF Archaeology database at the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) virtual meeting in April 2021.
