Demolition on the Mallory Street Bridge to be Completed with Single Lane Closures
Controlled demolition to be conducted with single lane closures on I-64 east starting as early as Oct. 28.
HAMPTON – As part of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project, the Mallory Street Bridge will be replaced. Currently crews have shifted traffic to the north side of the bridge in order to start controlled demolition on the south side.

While this construction activity was previously planned with a detour on I-64 east at Mallory Street, crews have adjusted demolition plans to require only single lane closures on I-64 east to reduce impact on motorists. Lane closures will take place overnight from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. starting as early as Thursday, October 28 for controlled demolition work.

Once crews complete demolition on bridge sections over I-64 east (VA Medical Center side), they will then work to remove the section of the bridge over I-64 west (Phoebus side). When this construction activity begins, travelers on I-64 west can expect single lane closures to take place nightly from 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. until all of the old bridge sections have been removed.

Pedestrians and motorists traveling on the Mallory Street Bridge will still be able to utilize the north side of the bridge. Please be aware that there may alternating lane closures with flaggers present on Mallory Street between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. nightly. Residents living and working near Mallory Street Bridge may experience some noise impacts from the construction activities.

Motorists can view the weekly lane closure report for information on the controlled partial demolition on the project webpage: www.HRBTExpansion.org
